Spybot doesn't work with my XP system Ad-Aware is not good these days. I'm using Superantispyware and Kaspersky Anti-Virus.

Could someone reccomend another good free anti-malware?

Thanks in advance.

Kaspersky and Superantispyware should be plenty, long with a hardware firewall in the form of a router, limited user account, up-to-date software and common sense.

Thank you for both of your responses. I fixed someone's computer and it was set up well; but his kids took off Spybot and Ad-Aware a year ago and he's had no anti-virus for a year. He let's his kids do anything.

He should assert his rights as adminisrator, but is too laid back.

I'm just trying to ressurect the dead, but so it goes!

Thanks again.

BTW: It's still screwed up. I'm recommending he takes it to a shop for an XP reinstall. I've done it before and in 2 weeks they'd clicked on all the floating balloons AND POPUPS so you can guess what it ran like.

I've offerred to reinstall if he watches and takes notes, but he lacks the motavation.

You may also want to add Malawarebytes Anti-malware and Ccleaner.

I downloaded Malwarebytes but didn't install it. I used CCleaner, but I'm afraid to mess with the registry, because the whole computer might just collapse. And I'm blamed for any problem anyway.

I have yet to see a bombed PC caused by CCLEANER, and I've run that program on a good many of them! There are probably no worries with CCLEANER.

I love malwarebytes myself. Maybe some malware has been blocking the install of it?

Doesn't anyone use Microsoft security essentials? I started using it a while back and removed AVG, using it stand alone and it has been great, although I don't go to risky places.

I used Kaspersky and realized he wouldn't be sophiticated enough to understand it. I also used Superantispyware. I found a little over 30 viruses and malware. Kaspersky found a rootkit that I left on the machine.

I finally installed Microsoft Security Essentials and that might be a bit much for him. I left the Superantispyware on and removed Kaspersky. I hope MSE works well.

MSE is very good as is Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

for general maintenance Glary's Utilities is great too.

I used to use AVG solely, then added MSE and MSE always alerted me before AVG would, then I kept getting messages from AVG to remove MSE since it was a conflict so I removed AVG.

I had a Trojan that MSSE could not get rid of (it would come back every time I rebooted), so I went looking in the security thread, and Hitman Pro free version finally got rid of it.

Hitman pro is great. I'd recommend it over malwarebytes. It's more of an on-demand scanner you'd use when you think you're infected with something.

Avira and AVG seem to be popular free programs for day to day use.
