Looking for a good LCD Monitor that would be good for gaming, 20 to 22 inch. And is a wide screen on a good choice?

Thanks for all your help

Personally I love the 21.1" widescreen monitor I bought last year :

NEC Multisync 20WGX2 ,
it looks good on my desk even switched off ,the picture is awesome and I can confirm that their customer services are good too.....had to RMA my first monitor and I had my new one up and running in under 24 hours at no cost to me.

Only small problem is that it aint cheap ....but they have come down by about £50 since I bought mine for £435.

Well almost every 22" that's out right now is a TN panel, which from a monitor enthusiast's point of view, basically suck.
However from my point of view? I think they suffice. You probably can find a great 22" for 230-240.00? These things come cheap, but have a excellent picture quality, and low ms.

If you check out fatwallet's forums or slickdeal's forums you can probably find a 20% off coupon on Dell LCDs. Dell's 22" looks pretty nice.

I wouldn't recommend that Dell 22'' as the panel is pretty crappy. stay away from TN and that other one S-PVA? ( may be wrong the samsung panel. ) I'd recommend a S-IPS panel

Most gamers I know don't care if it's a TN, S-IPS or PVA panel. As long as the screen looks good to them when they're playing.

HP's w2207 is another good one.

Another proud VX2025WM owner here. Good colors, no ghosting and no dead pixels. Only thing is it lacks internal scaling.

The stickied LCD thread should probably have its font increased and be flashing alternating colors.

HP W2207.

But aside from the NEC, pretty much all 20-22" WS LCDs are TNs, which means by definition, they suck

I've heard some of these are S-IPS and others aren't. If you were lucky enough to get a S-IPS panel it wouldn't be a bad monitor.

edit: you may be able to talk to dell and make sure you get a S-IPS panel

I debated this very purchase for 6 months...here is a summary of what drove my decision.

20.1": In going widescreen, 20.1" just wasn't big enough to truly enjoy the immersive experience of widescreen gaming, but the 20.1" model range does have some high quality and very well reviewed LCDs.

22": TN panels, but the sweet spot of price, performance and size.

24": Ideal, but I determined that 24" was simply too big for my needs...that, and the 24" LCDs were out of my price range.

I went with the LG 226WT, the highest rated LCD of the 22" TN crop. It is quite impressive for gaming, and the size is perfect, especially at the price point of $340. If you do go with the LG, there are three variants available. I have the 226WTQ, which does have ghosting issues in desktop applications, but I haven't noticed any ghosting in games. If you go with the LG, the common recommendation is the get the 226WT, not the 226WTX or 226WTQ. Best Buy has the 226WT, and I believe it is on sale this weekend for Mother's Day.

Yes, they are significantly different. The 1935 is a TN panel, whereas the 2025 is P-MVA.

LG L226WT or the new
HP w2207

The LG is top-rated, but the HP w2207 has the distinction of having a glossy screen which makes the picture more vivid.

Downside of the HP is one-year warranty (Booo!) and too expensive. Here in Canada, prices at Futureshop are:

HP w2207: $449
Samsung (panel lottery) 226BW: $399
LG L226WT: $369

So it's LG all the way, although I would consider the HP, despite the short warranty, if it were below $400. I have played with the HP and LG side-by-side, and the HP is a very interesting alternative...but not at the price they are asking.

I can understand not caring about the difference between S-IPS and PVA, but TN panels are a joke. They aren't even full 8-bit/channel devices. If you're going to buy a monitor, at least buy one that can properly show the full 24-bit spectrum.
