Do NOT get turtlebeach! I purchased a Z6a (aka Turtle Beach EarForce Charlie) and it broked at the hinges 3 times in 6 months! Because the hinges near the cans are plastic, the gradually break through normal use...by the fourth time I gave up RMAing it because it is not worth my time - they know it is faulty because not once did they contest the RMAs...

Can't go wrong with a Steelseries 5Hv2 or 7H. I'm sure it would perform as good or better than Turtle Beach and also not look as gaudy.

These are probably lower than the quality you are looking at, but I have the Corsair Vengeance 1300 and Skull Candy Slyr. Both seem to perform fine for my use. Functional difference is that the 1300 uses standard 3.5 mm audio and mic connections and the Slyr uses USB. The Slyr also includes audio connections for XBox and PS3. That makes the plug for the computer somewhat bulky. However, you can disconnect the Slyr cord about halfway and then you have a standard 3.5mm audio connection to use on portable devices. My son uses the Slyr for both his iPod use and computer. Again, not the highest quality, but adaptable. I think I paid $45 for the Corsair and $70 for the Slyr.

I will likely try the next step up on the Corsair Vengeance next. I like the over-ear design of the 1300 and the higher model will have the USB. Good luck. Lots to choose from.

Do NOT get turtle turd beach headsets. Worst. quality. ever.

I just bought a set of X42s two weeks ago to replace old Plantronics Gamecom 370s. The Plantronics were notorious for breaking on the left part of the headset where the boom mic fit into the plastic band.

The TB X42s are much more sturdy compared to the 370s. I can flex them w/o fear of snapping, they weigh less and they don't make my ears sweat either. Oh, and NO CORDS !!! To say TB has the worst quality ever means you never had the misfortune of using the Gamecoms.

So far, the only downside to the X42s is having to manually change my audio stream default from TOSLink to speakers when I want to shake the room, and the fact that the X42s turn off after 6 minutes of no audio pumped thru them, so I frequently have to turn them back on if not listening to music at all times.

True. Never tried gamecons. I wish you luck with the TB's and hope your experience is better than mine was. You should know within a few months if yours will have the same faulty speaker problems mine had. RMA'd twice for same problem and each time headsets failed within a few months.
