Berserk. watch it past midnight only. it'll fuck your mind up

No thanks. My lil brother watches that lame ultra gore for no reason with poorly tied-in storyline.

mate, you dont know what you are missing! berserk is insane after a first few episodes!
Anyway the choice is yours.

you should check websites like animereviews.com. and look at their top 10 list! Berserks either 1st or second.

The other thing i really like is 'Monster' and 'Ghost in the shell'! bot of them top notch

Avoid these recommendations (assuming your taste is like mine):
Vampire Hunter D (any incarnation) - Horrible
Ninja Scroll (the movie - never seen the series) - horrible with bonus misogyny and terrible pacing

Honestly, the instant anyone recommends either of those, I ignore the rest of their opinions because I thought these were so bad.

My recommendations:
Anything by satoshi kon: Perfect Blue, Millenium Actress, Paranoia Agent, Paprika (though Paprika was IMO by far his worst film)
Serial Experiments: Lain, texhnolyze, haibane renmei (Lain being the best of this group)
Whisper of the Heart and the Cat Returns
Other miyazaki greats (Nausicaa, Princess Mononoke, Castle in the Sky and kids ones like My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's delivery service)
All incarnations of Ghost in the Shell
Samurai 7 (but only if you've seen 7 samurai)
Full Metal Alchemist (starts off seemingly weak and gets better and better - be patient and have faith that it becomes truly great)
Akira

Those are the only ones that in my opinion stand as great shows / movies regardless of being in the category of anime. Appleseed is mediocre, although if you can get past a weak storyline it's worth watching. FLCL is great but only works largely as a criticism / parody of other anime, and does not stand alone as great work if you do not get the references (IMO). You might enjoy "Monster" too although it started to tire me out after a while.

I thought it was pretty bad.

i enjoyed it. not mind blowing but i enjoyed it.
The story wasn't good enough that I could get over the way their noses were drawn.

OP: It's easier to find high-quality manga.

Shakugan No Shana
Zero No Tsukaima
Tsubasa Chronicle/xxxHolic (its a dual universe, you have to watch/read both)

Elfen Lied... an amazing story, the gore is well done and really drives the point home in the show, but the fan service is just stupid. All and all is just an amazing amazing story.

I just started watching Black Lagoon. No central plotline but the animation is really well done and it's decently entertaining. You can also take a look at Chrno Crusade.

Please keep in mind that these lists are entirely based on my own personal opinion.

Movies that I particularly enjoyed:

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
My Neighbor Totoro
Porco Rosso

Anime titles that I particularly enjoyed:

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Elfen Lied
Cowboy Bebop
Wolf's Rain
12 Kingdoms
(plot is unfinished. IIRC, the author of the novels died)
Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu (might not be as enjoyable without first watching the [mediocre] first season)
Gundam 8th MS Team (I would only recommend this series if you enjoy Gundams... some people don't)
Berserk (needs to be paired with the manga; else, it's only above average)
Samurai Champloo
Ergo Proxy
Monsters
(very long and slow... I had to take a break half way through)
AzuManga Daioh
Great Teacher Onizuka
(some episodes were plain bad; but overall, the series should leave a good impression on. It's kind of a "feel-good" anime.)

Some anime titles that I presumably enjoyed... though I can't clearly remember the reason or possibly even the anime itself:
Hunter X Hunter (it has been forever since watching this... slightly childish, but still amazing IIRC)
Rurouni Kenshin (starts off good, but then gets progressively worse as it moves away from the manga)
Kemonozume (animation is "unique"... and the plot got rather strange near the end)
Ichigo Marshmallow (no comment... >_> )
Shingetsutan Tsukihime
Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien

Hikaru no Go
Saikano
FLCL

I am probably forgetting a bunch of other ones... oh well. If anything, I would recommend that the OP watch the three movies listed above for sure (if he hasn't already).

I believe I'm even more discerning with my anime than the OP: I'd dismiss Neon Genesis Evangelion and Spirited Away. Instead, add Katsuhiro Otomo's Memories. It's amazing! You should be able to rent it at Blockbuster. It's a collection of three subtitled short films: Memories EP 1: Magnetic Rose (disturbing; easily the best), Stink Bomb (hilarious), and Cannon Fodder (artistic).

As a matter of fact, go for anything from Katsuhiro Otomo... Akira Special Edition (most successful Anime film in US history) and Steamboy (less preferred due to "whine-y" English dub almost as bad a Spirited Away). Both should be easy to find.

OH NOES kill yourself already
same to whoever mentioned Zero no Tsukaima, to a lesser extent

BPS was definitely good, nice catchy tunes (ED in particular) but definitely low budget. If you liked the show, check out CODE-E from July 2007. To me, that has a same cheaply made yet interesting quasi sci-fi feel with decent amount of moe factor.

List of unordinarily good shows from 2007 (sorted by the first airing date, cherry picked for HQ)
January
Gakuen Utopia Manabi Straight (1/8)
Hidamari Sketch (1/11)
note: I never saw enough of Getsumen To Heiki Mina and thus reserve my opinion on it. Kyoshiro to Towa no Sora if you are a)huge Kaishaku fan b)want something "so bad it's good" A very tough call between Manabi and Hidamari - both near-perfect shows.

February
note: Rocket Girl was actually an interesting show. Not a HQ, mind you.

March
note: Hitohira was decent notwithstanding some deficiencies here and there.

April
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (4/1)
Hayate no Gotoku! (4/1)
sola (4/7)
Lucky?Star (4/8)
note: I liked Polyphonica, despite its appearnce in the infamous "cabbage video". A special note - Lucky?Star is the best KyoAni show to me up to date, while Hayate rivals it (!)

July
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai (7/6)
Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei (7/7)
Moetan (7/8)

note: With Higurashi, I am convinced that sequels could be much better than their predecessors. PPD was definitely more parody-happy and moe-packed, but Z-2bow is funnier. Need to see more of School Days (dully impresive) to tell where the show is headed. Doujin work is getting dangerously funnier as of late.

If I go by my definition of HQ, moetan is most definitely it: lovable characters, superb drawing, great humor and little engrish to boot (a stark difference from Nanatsu-iro Drops). What is there to not like about it? Any adult oriented show with a decent amount of wits and efforts makes an inherently supeiror material in my book over some of other stuff so zealously followed by some anime does not need to have violence in it to be fun, ok?

Also, past-dwellers please do yourselves a favor and try something new for a change. There is no harm in releasing yourself from the fear of your cherished classics being surpassed by some random new series. Preaching "old school" doesnt make you look any cooler, really.

now, where is my cookie for reviving this thread

I do appreciate very VERY well made animes with great plot device, thought-provoking story and deep character developlments.

There are only very few that makes the cut:
Cowboy Bebop
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Grave of the Fireflies
Spirited Away

Anything else worth watching? Please recommend some decent ones that wouldn't waste my time. Any movies?

give up

bebop was amusing and grave of the fireflies was great.
but most anime these days is childish nonsense or philosobabble nonsense like the ghost in the shell/evangelion stuff.

catch up on old classic films and stuff instead.

Samauri Champloo is one of the more trendy animes good for 20-30 year olds.

For movies watch Paprika (just came out), Macros Plus, Akira (of course)

wow, I can't believe no one mention One Piece. It's got everything, pirates, actions, comedy, and above all, a great great story and character development.
