OH NOES kill yourself already
same to whoever mentioned Zero no Tsukaima, to a lesser extent
BPS was definitely good, nice catchy tunes (ED in particular) but definitely low budget. If you liked the show, check out CODE-E from July 2007. To me, that has a same cheaply made yet interesting quasi sci-fi feel with decent amount of moe factor.
List of unordinarily good shows from 2007 (sorted by the first airing date, cherry picked for HQ)
January
Gakuen Utopia Manabi Straight (1/8)
Hidamari Sketch (1/11)
note: I never saw enough of Getsumen To Heiki Mina and thus reserve my opinion on it. Kyoshiro to Towa no Sora if you are a)huge Kaishaku fan b)want something "so bad it's good" A very tough call between Manabi and Hidamari - both near-perfect shows.
February
note: Rocket Girl was actually an interesting show. Not a HQ, mind you.
March
note: Hitohira was decent notwithstanding some deficiencies here and there.
April
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (4/1)
Hayate no Gotoku! (4/1)
sola (4/7)
Lucky?Star (4/8)
note: I liked Polyphonica, despite its appearnce in the infamous "cabbage video". A special note - Lucky?Star is the best KyoAni show to me up to date, while Hayate rivals it (!)
July
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai (7/6)
Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei (7/7)
Moetan (7/8)
note: With Higurashi, I am convinced that sequels could be much better than their predecessors. PPD was definitely more parody-happy and moe-packed, but Z-2bow is funnier. Need to see more of School Days (dully impresive) to tell where the show is headed. Doujin work is getting dangerously funnier as of late.
If I go by my definition of HQ, moetan is most definitely it: lovable characters, superb drawing, great humor and little engrish to boot (a stark difference from Nanatsu-iro Drops). What is there to not like about it? Any adult oriented show with a decent amount of wits and efforts makes an inherently supeiror material in my book over some of other stuff so zealously followed by some anime does not need to have violence in it to be fun, ok?
Also, past-dwellers please do yourselves a favor and try something new for a change. There is no harm in releasing yourself from the fear of your cherished classics being surpassed by some random new series. Preaching "old school" doesnt make you look any cooler, really.
