I'll second the one mention of Trigun and add the not yet mentioned Noir. The latter of which has an excellent sound track.

My current favorite right now is Blood+

Sony recently added English audio and its on Cartoon Network Saturday nights at 12:30 AM.

My other favorite although its primary for tweenies is Avatar: The Last Airbender. Awesome characters and a great story.

Not sure was qualifies as high quality.
Akira has excellent plot but nothing special in the way of visuals.

For visual quality I'd recommend the 2nd Ghost in the Shell and the TV shows. Also the 3D Appleseed movie.

I also liked Grave of the Fireflies, and Neon Genesis Evangelion (although it was a bizarre ending).

I just finished watching Elfen Lied, and it was absolutely amazing.

Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade was IMHO the best movie (anime or non-anime) of 1999.

Blue Gender was excellent up to the last 15 minutes. I still don't understand WTF happened.

Others already mentioned:
Trigun
Samurai Champloo
Voices of a Distant Star (Hoshi No Koe) - the English dub is crap - watch the original Japanese w/English subtitles. This entire movie was created by ONE guy on a Mac!

Other stuff by Hayao Miyazaki
- Howl's Moving Castle (probably my favorite, and the latest English release)
- Castle in the Sky
- Porco Russo
- Kiki's Delivery Service
- Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
- My Neighbor Totoro
- Pom Poko (ok, this one is really bizarre. I really can't recommend it)

For a popcorn series:
Bubblegum Crisis

Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien <-- (sad)
Air <-- (also sad)
Elfen Lied <-- (very wtf, has some nudity in the OP and I think ED too, great plot)
Suzumiya Haruhi No Yuutsu (very funny, well worth watching in both orders)
Ghost in the Shell (all of it)

Berserk. watch it past midnight only. it'll fuck your mind up

No thanks. My lil brother watches that lame ultra gore for no reason with poorly tied-in storyline.
I never watched the anime, but the manga's storyline is great. And it's not just gore.

I liked the characters in Hellsing, but the anime/story itself was weak, no argument from me there. Berserk didn't feel rushed to me, having read the manga I don't really see what you are talking about. The ending to me was very powerful and just made me want to get up and check every second for the next manga chapter .

The Hellsing anime started out right, but went into some weird story line that seemed to try to be more mass appeal (OMG ALUCARD = DRACULA!? type of stuff). The "new" OVA Hellsing Ultimate follows the manga using the Neo Nazis and such. It's actually quite crazy at times and carries the manga's somewhat cartoony feel (as it switches to the lackadaisical animation at times).

Shin Seiki Evangelion is way overrated by people. People applaud it as being some great psychological anime when it was only written by a crackpot that tried to off himself.

Also, when it comes to "high quality" anime, people tend to have different tastes as what I consider high quality might not be the same for you. Per that, I actually like shonen anime, and although I do find that the animation on these tends to become subpar on the long drawn-out series, I usually like the story lines (excluding fillers). One Piece is still one of my favorite anime series. Pretty much read just about all the manga chapters (lacking on the newer ones) and most of the episodes (I ignored the gap between K-F and the people doing the HD TV-rip episodes).

Oh and I must say that Shounan Jun'ai Gumi and Bad Company are better than Great Teacher Onizuka by far. I enjoyed the first half of GTO, but found myself getting bored in the second half. Shounan and Bad Company, which also feature Eikichi Onizuka and his partner, whose name I forget. Shounan is more of a comedy where Bad Company is where the two meet each other. The anime for Shounan Jun'ai Gumi is being subtitled at the moment as well and I've seen... I think 2 episodes come out already?

I don't really watch much anime anymore as it's a lot harder to capture me into the series. There are a couple series that I read the manga for and watched the anime, but it just didn't get to me. I read Wangan Midnight, but the anime just didn't do much for me... maybe it's because the chapter:episode ratio seems to be 1:1, which is absurdly low and if you've read the manga, tends to make it too drawn out.

GUU

<== knows little about anime, but roommate says it's funny.

Jungle wa Itsumo Hare Nochi Guu is the full title and it's quite an amusing anime, but it's very ... very weird. There are two sequels to it. The title translates into something like "The Jungle was Normal, then Came Guu" or something like that. I love the Christmas episode with their depiction of Santa Claus .

Oh, one last one. Battle Programmer Shirase (BPS). Great Fun to Watch.

Battle Programmer Shirase was great, but definitely too short. I think it's better if you're more of a computer nerd, because it might hit home a little bit.

Grr the ending to that series pissed me off... he was such a man whore.

I've been thinking about getting into Romeo x Juliet, as I should have all of the episodes (I'm a download addict, if it comes out, I will download it) and maybe giving the Blue Dragon anime another try... the first episode didn't grab me too well. What I really need is another stage of Initial D .

Deathnote is one of the most interesting series I've ever seen .... and if I can sit my ass down and finally watch the last 3 episodes I'll be happy.

GTO is one of the few comedy anime series that doesn't go over the top I feel.

Berserk, while ultra violent and gory does have a very well put together storyline. Though the manga does a much better job of course.

Now and Then, Here and There is probably my all time favorite, kinda depressing though.

I wast talking about GTO with a buddy yesterday and wanted to know how popular it was with ATOT folks. Did a search and low and behold there is an up to date post mentioning it. I love GTO. Sometimes all the fighting and greatness and power channeling and crap can get old. A dude my age becoming a teach to try and score with high school girls - now that's entertainment.

Parts of the beginning are really bad, but the last ten episodes are incredible. Some of the best music I've ever heard, Yoko Kanno FTW.

Death Note got lame after the corporation got their hands on one of the Death Note books. That's when I stopped reading the manga, although I do watch the Live Action version of Death Note, which I believe movie 2 is already out and subbed.
