It's something I do, because it provides insurance for my daughter (crappy as it is). Everything else I do is self-employment so there are no bennies available. I'm happy to share what I know.
Home Depot is complete and utter crap, just like 90% of all corporate retail jobs out there. They're obnoxious, ignorant, ridiculous, and a pain in the ass most of the time (talking about corporate and upper management for the most part).
You'll probably top out around $10/hr. Full time benefits are BARELY acceptable, part time benefits are among the worst I've ever had the displeasure of receiving. 20hrs vacation after your first year of work, 2 hours sick/personal time per month, basic insurance for you will run you about $300-400 per month. Don't even get me started on the other supposed 'benefits'.
They're ANAL about ridiculous rules, are currently closing stores all across the US, and are facing layoffs and restructures as a result of running the company into the ground (thanks to the last CEO) and the current economic downturn. You'll be constantly bombarded with requests to take extra days off so they can cut hours, and most part timers are being held to 16 hours per week. Look for SERIOUS problems with the Depot in the coming months.
Now, that being said:
I love it for what it is. It's a part time job to get insurance for my daughter while I finish school. It's graveyard (10pm - 6am)ish so I don't have to deal with customers, we can play our own music, we get to cut loose and have some fun (because we work like freaking animals and get our stuff (and everyone elses) done right and fast). I work with AWESOME people who share my feelings about the company and have found a way to exist in the hell-hole which is the depot. It's a physical job so it's good for me (more or less) while everything else I do is desk work. Since I don't care about the job, being this close to my Masters and a real career, I can have this attitude openly and not give a damn about any repercussions...which makes it a fairly stress free work environment.
You asked about other positions...well, floor associate (stock, help customers, etc), cashier (duh), IMA (ordering, inventory control), receiving (combination paperwork and unloading trucks), OP (get together peoples orders for pickup), and various department specialist positions. Most are fairly easy to get into since turnover is constant and high.
If there's anything else you want to know I'm happy to answer any questions.
