I will be living in an apartment for the next couple of years that allows dogs. The thing is, I want a big dog, but I work and live by myself. So basically looking for a big dog that doesn't need a lot of exercise.

Suggestions?

Note: Rottweiler is my first pick.

First off, don't get a dog if you can't give it exercise or pay attention to it.

Second, I love Rottweilers, they're my first pick too.

Third, don't get a dog if you can't give it exercise or pay attention to it.

I'll be able to pay attention to it, just not while I"m at work. Plenty of dog owners have to deal with that. Plus, there are plenty of dogs that do not require "a lot" of exercise.

In Ontario Canada they are looking at banning Rotweilers and Pitt Bulls because of all the attacks latley by those types of dog...

Check local laws and bills and whatnot to make sure this wont be an issue for you later on.

I was expecting this to be another thread by vi_edit! Good thing it's not.

A rottweiller will need the excersize and attention, so that's probably not a great choice. I have a Rot / Black lab mix, and it needs lots of love and outside time.

A boxer would be a good choice. They are fairly well behaved, and a walk / jog every night is just about all they need as far as excersize goes. They are very attention hungry dogs, though.

Yeah, thanks for the advice. I love boxers. My uncle has one and that dog is friggin awesome. They are really rowdy dogs though (at least that one is), I would think a bigger dog such as a Rot is less likely to tear up furniture or need as much exercise.

That's the stupidest things I've ever heard. It's the owners that treat the dogs like crap and therefore make the dogs bad tempered; it's not the dog's fault. Some people are so stupid. All the Rottweilers I've ever known have been really playful and good natured.

Fvck canada!

Mastiff
Bull Mastiff
Bulldog

None of these dogs give a rats ass if they just get a walk around the block. You better be around a LOT though, because you don't want a mastiff sized crap on your bed from a pissed off lonely dog.

Hell yeah, my old neighbor had a Rot, that was the coolest, nicest dog ever.

Or consider lab, but any big dog will be fairly miserable in an apt. Especially if unatended all day long.

Yes. No dog is mean by nature. It's abuse and neglect that make them bad tempered. Leaving them alone in an apartment all day would be a sure instance of neglect I'm afraid...

I don't think that a Rottie is that kind of dog.

I would suggest adopting a dog from a shelter rather than getting a pup.

Pups need to be occupied constantly and pee every couple of hours - not great for your house while you are at work all day.
A dog over a year old will probably be more calm and house trained and be a better bet.

There are a lot of great dogs out there which have been given up through no fault of their own (we adopted 2)

Check out www.petfinder.com to see whats available locally.
Go meet a few and find out as much as you can about their background before you decide on one.

It is how the dog is raised that they will act. My wife and I have two dogs: American Bulldog and a Shih-tzu. My wife and I both work full time, so they are in a kennel with eachother all day long and think nothing of it. The bulldog is extremely mild mannered and doesn't have a care in the world. I would suppose the boredom that would normally be there isn't, because there are two of them. Either way, if you raise a dog from day one to be kenneled for eight hours and be "free" when you get home, that is just the way it is. Dogs are intelligent, but do not reason. Everything they "know" is learned. A dog is not going to sit in it's kennel all day long and plan how it is going to get back at the owner for not being there.

Yeah I agree with Murphee. Go to the pound and find a bigger calm dog rather then a puppy. Puppies are cute and fun but also a huge pain in the ass. I just picked up another foster dog today. Pic I'll have some better pics later when my batteries charge up. He is still a bit hyper at 10 months but I have two other dogs to keep him occupied when I am not around.

hes right, puppies take about as much attention as a newborn baby; and if they dont get it early on, they can be very hard to control as they grow up.

my cousin has a Great Dane he keeps inside; but Im pretty sure he get outside with it regularly to excersize it some

A good 'manly' dog for apartment life is a Sheltie (aka Shetland Sheepdog).
They are more of a medium sized dog and not too large however they are atheletic fun dogs. It is like having a big dog in a smaller package. However like most dogs, they do like to be played with and excercises, they are a sheepdog after all.

If you can't excercise your dog and give it a lot of attention, perhaps you need something like a cat instead. I also do think getting a rescue animal is probabaly a better ethical thing to do.

We got our pug and sheltie from registered AKC breeders, but the two cats we got were rescue kittens. As much as I loved my pug and my sheltie I think for now on I will try to adopt via shelters and other rescue programs.
