EXACTLY. I have a razr now, and I am switching to a Motofone as soon as they became available. I read about them on Gizmodo - they are aimed at "developing markets" aka India or 3rd world countries, where featureset means nothing but build quality, reception, reliability and battery life are paramount.

Unfortunately, that means it will be tough to get my hands on one stateside - thank you Ebay!

It should cost $50.

It looks like you can get them on Ebay right now for ~$95 shipped. They are currently not authorized by the FCC though, and I don't want to pad someone's pockets -that- much.

I still can't wait though, the F3 Motofone it hotness.

unfortunately the f3 is ~$100 shipped on ebay. most come with accessories. i guess a car charger is something worthwhile if you don't already have one. not a bad phone to have for places you can't take a camera or as a world phone for cdma users

i wonder how that display is in low light situations.

I don't NEED all those gimmicky toys
I WANT a phone that combines excellent build quailty with the 'basic' functions
I am HAPPY to pay a decent amount for a well made mobile that looks great while providing me with the 'basics' (if that's what you'd describe calling and texting, which is all most people i know use their mobiles for...)
The only phones out there that AREN'T sprinkled with shoddy cameras/radios/mp3players/vast mini HDDs are cheap, crappy, and badly made...as far as i can tell...

The solution seems glaringly obvious. Buy a phone that has excellent build quality, and don't use the features you don't want... I mean, if your choices are phones with good quality and extras you don't want or a featureless phone of crap quality, wouldn't you have to be stupid to pick the latter?

For any given price, a phone with more features will be lower quality and be bigger than one with less. Do you really think you are only paying $50 for that Razr? The cost is redistributed to your bills.

I think that if he has a choice between a quality phone and a crappy phone, he should pick the quality phone regardless of what features it has that he doesn't want.

I was interested in the motofone for a while, but when I learned it would have a segmented display, as opposed to a pixel based display, I figured texting would suck too much. Looking at the screen captures, text is kind of painful to read.

I don't think you've actually added anything to this discussion except perhaps a snide little bit of trolling

I'm well aware that i can buy a well made phone with 11ty billion features, and if i can't get my hands on something like that motofone i will, i was merely wondering if what i wanted existed. From the majority of replies in this thread, it appears many other people would be interested in the same thing.

A phone without all that junk could be smaller, have much better battery life, and look more elegant into the bargain, so forgive me if i've an interest in anything other than the 'glaringly obvious'
