thanks for suggestions but I dont think I want to deal with complications of flight sims atm. I will try freespace 2 though.

Wow, I love you guys. I lost my FS2 disks awhile ago and thought the source code release was without sound - which sucks.

Falcon 4.0 Allied Force is way more complicated then the IL-2 series. I think IL-2 1946 is the last installment of a already growing old engine. I have them all, good challenging sims. May want to look at Lucas Arts classics in the value bin for the arcade stuff.

Neither of the engines for Falcon or IL-2 are old, it's just a case of how many different ways can you package an air combat sim?

The IL-2 series uses the same engine from the initial release in 2001.

Falcon 4.0 is even older, 1998 with development going back a few years before that.

Both are starting to show their age.

The next release by Maddox is Storm of War: Battle of Britain and will use a new engine.

So I got me FS Open. Looks like a very intriguing and detailed game that I will have to sink some time into to learn, which is likely to happen after my exams.

What I was initially looking for was more like Terminal Veolocity equivalent with better gfx though

Freelancer. Great SP, awesome combat, good mod community. It's a bit old but the graphics still hold up well.

yeah, freelancer is something I still play. They just released a new mod pack like a month or two ago that completely made the game worth playing over again, like 100 new weapons, new ships, etc. and the graphics are on par with a lot of space sims today...the game can be rather linear until you finish the story line, but then you can do whatever you please. I say after you finish the storyline because you can't really go everywhere until you do that.

I never played freespace 2 though, people are recommending this though, i'm actually gonna go read some reviews right now

I recently played a bit of Blazing Angels 2: Secret Missions of WW2 or what it's called.
It's very arcadey and it plays nice with a gamepad. Reminded me abit of X-Wing and Tie Fighter. The graphics engine looks nice but runs like a POS. If you want to play in 1680x1050 with AA on and everything on high the game needs more than Crysis and doesn't look nearly as good.
And the feeling of hitting someone and managing kills or bombing runs isn't as good as it could be, as is the overall presentation and menus. The flying model is a joke though, at least on arcade. You can practically hover without stalling.
I'd say it's a solid 70% and if you want a quick flying fix it can provide that.

This thread makes me wish that the people at LucasArts were developing a next-gen X-Wing game. Could you imagine the awesome-ness?

x3 requires WAY TO MUCH MICRO MANAGEMENT that's my favorite game in the whole world...there's nothing better than leaving your computer on all night long so your companies can make you a fortune He wants something that doesn't require thinking, just straight out load the game, kill things...

But X3 is the best game ever if you like open ended game play and a real business model based on supply and demand. It's definately not for everybody though. It took me like a month to get the hang of X2, so if you're not familiar with the series, it's learning curve isn't very nice.

Or Tie Figher, I thought X-Wing just didn't compare to strafing medical frigates with a Tie Interceptor Those were the glory days of fight and flight games! IF ANYONE KNOWS HOW TO GET A COPY OF THIS GAME, I'D LOVE TO HEAR OF IT! I lost my copy years ago and I've been looking ever since.

That game and what was the FPS they had around that time? Like Dark Trooper or something? That game rocked too.
