Dear all,

Is there someone who knows a recent shooter like in the days of afterburner and top gun or rogue squadron. Bottom line:
- use joystick
- nice graphs
- just shoot enemy planes/boats

Thanks from a simple man who refuses to play another difficult flight sim,
Bram

I recently read about IL-Sturmovik: 1946...Was rated 10/10 in GFW magazine. I would definitely check it out if I was more into flying games...

He doesn't want a complex flight sim. Aren't the IL-Sturmovik games complex?

VERY. They're awesome...but they are difficult if you don't know what you are doing and don't want to read the 200-300 page manual.

Yea, see, and he doesn't want that. Just a simple airplane shoot-em-up.

I own IL-2 Sturmi: 1945 and it's just awesome! The graphics are unlike anything I've seen in the past and it seems so realistic. I say seems, because I've never flown as a pilot nor as a WWII pilot, but it sure is one hell of a ride.

There's not too much for single missions, so you might want to check on forums.ubisoft.com for anything custom made.

Definitely get an advanced stick if you're going to play it. I have an X-52 w/ pedals and it's still difficult, but I haven't fully programmed my stick and throttle yet.

What 200-300 page manual? I got something that was like 46 pages.

Il-2 is actually pretty fun at the lower realism settings even with invuln or unlimited ammo
I've done some multiplay with friends who used a keyboard only and it was still a blast.

Thanks to you all,
Bram

sorry I had to revive the thread...
doesnt seem like I found the answer here.

What I want is something very much like what OP wants, except I dont want any pre-jet era planes. Spaceships are preferred (on the premise that there are going to be more flashier eyecandies from beam weapons and whatnot) Again, dont want anything overly complicated... Just wanted to try something with this free joystick I snagged from my friend

Ever play either of the Freespace games? They are old, but are a couple of the best games ever made (IMO).

I was going to mention it somewhere there. No I have no experiecne with it but I did notice a few threads on it. How are the graphics by today's standards? I think one thread suggested getting it off of a modsite instead of underdogs.

I believe in the free games thread there is a post mentioning the Freespace 2 Open source project. Last I heard it modernized FS2's graphics and physics a bit and made one of the best space-combat games of all time (hell, one of the best games of all time) even better.

Edit: Found it.

Installing it for old times' sake. Can't wait to get back to blasting some Shivan ships into oblivion.

It's a space shooter, but the ships handle like planes and it's not a bad game at all. Look up FreeSpace 2, it thas a large fan base that has kept the game updated over the years and it looks pretty good to me. There's also a LOT of community-made campaigns and such to keep you busy.

edit: whoops, seems this is necro-threaded, and a couple people already beat me to it anyway

The graphics should get a substantial overhaul soon, with the addition of normal and parallax mapping. There are a bunch of threads and screenshots on it around the forums.

Falcon 4.0 Allied Force is way more complicated then the IL-2 series. I think IL-2 1946 is the last installment of a already growing old engine. I have them all, good challenging sims. May want to look at Lucas Arts classics in the value bin for the arcade stuff.

One of my favorite games of all time was Jane's WWII Fighters. I really wish they'd release another game like that.

I was a big fan of Strike Commander back in the day, I dunno if many flight sims are that "light" anymore though. The merc angle was awesome.

Try LOMAC gold.
You graphic card needs to be up to the job on this game.
Otherwise it's a slide show for yiu.

Neither of the engines for Falcon or IL-2 are old, it's just a case of how many different ways can you package an air combat sim?

For WWII:
Aces High 1 & II, Air Warrior (defunct), War Birds I, II, III, Jane's, IL-2, etc

Jets:
Mig Ally Ace, F-15 Strike Eagle, F-15, Falcon, Falcon 2.0, 3.0, 4.0...

There were some WWI sims, but those didn't have the same appeal.
