I saw a picture of tax protesters standing on a corner and someone edited the photo to point out everything in the picture (e.g. roads/sidewalk) that taxpayer $$ supported.

Will provide a reward to whomever can find the photo!

How the heck do you cut taxes (especially to zero) and still continue to fund all our defense spending. Idiots.

Edit: apologies, that sounded rather P&N.

these people are uneducated. this is why they are teabaggers and why there isn't an arrow labeled "education" pointing to any of the them.

:hmm: but I bet that lady in the chair depends on Medicare. (socialized leftist commie evil medicine paid by taxes and supports death panels--for those that are unfamiliar with medicare.

They went to the school of hard knocks. Repeated head trauma can lead to paranoia and loss of smarts. Really hard knocks.

telco's paid for the phone line
With the assistsance of a government granted monopoly and constructed on a public right of way. If that is a small town in the pic then it is likely that taxes were taken from urban dwellers and used to subsidize that line as well.

true. I was just pointing it out.

They also missed pointing to the clothes and beer bellies of the protesters. Something tells me those were government funded as well.

To be fair, the state/town paid for a good chunk of those roads/signs, and it looks like they are protesting federal taxes (given the sign about not cutting defense). Of course I'm sure some of that came from the feds as well.

Of course the further irony is they probably paid little to no federal income tax

?

First google result for "tax protester irony" no qutoes

This picture makes no sense. Everything pointed out is paid for by a specific tax that is assessed at the local and state levels. The protesters are likely protesting the outrageous federal taxes we have, thus the "irony" in the picture is not applicable to their protest.

OP completely missed the point of the protesters. The notes in the picture being state/local level aside, they are protesting the Federal govt taking 30%+ from them in just income tax alone, and then spending it on the most idiotic projects possible. This does not include FICA and other things that are withheld from your check that are not counted in the income tax, which, by the way, Congress has raided repeatedly for more idiotic pork projects.

Actually, I'm using the picture in a talk on state & local taxes. NT though.

EDIT: and people don't bitch about their state & local taxes? Or how state and local governments use taxpayer money? Over-analysis of a picture fail.

Need an arrow to their blue jeans to cover the federal cotton subsidy. And an arrow to their paper signs to cover federally subsidized logging.

Regardless of what they are actually protesting, the picture does make an interesting discussion point.

It is very easy to know how I will vote on any proposition: If it involves any new money to the government (be it a "tax", "fee" or by any other name), I will vote against it. I will continue to do so until the government can show me that they will spend it wisely.

I firmly believe that the government (local, state, regional, national) brings in plenty of money, they just piss it away.

When they get their house in order (which may never happen, I realize), then we can talk about getting more of my money.

Why would you ever vote otherwise?

Because it is an iresponsible position that has lead to enormous deficit spending? "Starving the beast" doesn't work when the beast can print money or borrow freely. The only path to fiscal responsibility is to match spending to taxes. If folks want to vote for bread and circuses that's fine but it should hurt in the form of taxes. Simply holding an arbitrary line on taxes without a matching line on spending doesn't work; the two sides of the balance sheet need to be handled together.

I also vote in favor of balanced spending.

Voting for more taxes in hopes that the government will spend wisely is foolish.

If you voting against more taxes, when the government says it needs more money, you can at least start the conversation of where the other tax money went.
