I'm looking at the Canyon too, in a similar situation as you (replacing my ForesterXT) but I'll probably get the quad cab for more secure storage space. I drive a Silverado 2500HD occasionally and that thing feels massive. The Canyon is much more manageable in size. Even the regular duty full size trucks I've been in are huge now.

As far as gas vs diesel, make sure you do the math on it. It's a $4,000 option and with the prices of diesel where I'm at (generally a $0.60/gal increase over regular unleaded), I'd never make up the difference in purchase price with savings on fuel (assuming 19 vs 24mpg and 15k miles per year). Even if I assume I'd get 30mpg with the Duramax (which I won't according to the mpg figures people post at the forums) it'd be a 10 year payback.

I swear they offered a regular cab model but the websites all list extended/crew cabs. You should still consider that, I wouldn't want to park somewhere with my laptop backpack on the front seat, it's less conspicuous in the back.

That Canyon with diesel comes to 45K. LOL

You can get a Canyon with diesel for 37k. That sounds expensive but the 2500 truck with diesel option can go up to 70k+ while starting at 48k.

For the OP the Canyon/Colorado with V6 and king cab would fit their needs. Small cab but able to easily tow what they need to while getting decent gas mileage.

I can’t wait until the diesel truck racket comes crashing down.

Actually I have to get wait...because I can’t afford them new. I will gladly buy a 2018 2500HD LTZ Duramax off some 19 year old kid who defaulted on his 30 year variable rate loan

Yep. I'd buy one during the slump if things didn't take so long to change.
I wish I bought a good diesel 4 or 5 yrs ago for 8-10k. Could sell now & make $4k +.
Glad I don't need a diesel now. I almost don't need a truck but 18-20mpg is decent for now. No payments means saving up.

I'll go against the grain here and say avoid most of the small trucks. They end up costing almost the same as a full size. The one exception is the Frontier. They blow those old school half size pickups out for compact car prices. Which is where the prices on the smaller pickups used to be. Now they are overpriced IMHO. A ridgeline goes out the door costing more than a loaded accord. mid to upper trim Canyon/Colorado sells for more than a base 2500. Silly
