Target use to have a line called Itso which was pretty nice, you could buy different pieces hook them up together.

http://www.target.com/b/?node=618273..._shorturl_itso

that's the site for it, they apparently don't make them anymore and most of what I was looking for isn't available any longer. The closest thing I could find's the Expedit at Ikea, which is a lot bigger than I'm looking for. Wood with different configuration otions like Itso would be perfect.

Let me get this straight, you want a set of boxes?

Get some milk crates and zip tie them together?

Go to the local hardware store, get some wood and build your own?

Hire a local high school shop class to build you something?

Local prisons will sometimes make stuff for the public.

I have the itso, honestly go for the expedit...it's the one case where the ikea product is actually sturdier than the competition.

the expedia also comes in the 1*X or 2*X or Square configs.

uh a bit more that just boxes, they're made of wood and have some weight to them. If I just wanted boxes I'd go get some Rubbermade shit. These had nice doors and rails for the ones with draws. I'm an IT dude building my own from shit at the local hardware store would result in disaster lol.

I poked around more on Ikeas web site and saw others that weren't ginormous, 3 2x2's would be about perfect. Price seems really good too. Navigating their web site is about as fun as trying to make your way thru the store.

That Target stuff is actually kinda junky. Its covered in cheap plastic laminate. I like the stuff from Ikea better. The Ikea stuff is covered in less cheap more realistic looking laminate.

They're actually made from MDF and wood composite so they might not have the greatest wear in the world. If you're looking for something with real heft and durability I would consider calling around to high schools like he said or maybe even carpenters in general to see what they can whip up with plywood. You might catch a break and find someone who's got free time and willing to cut you a deal.

Do you mind my asking what you're planning on using the storage for?

filing cabinets and just basic storage. Nothing heavy, I don't have a ton of space so something small'ish that's semi modular so I can configure it how I wish. The Ikea one is pretty close to what I'm after, the base unit doesn't have a backing which I kind of wanted, but I'm sure I can buy some particle board or something and add it myself. And looking at the assembly instructions on the 4x2 unit the top 2 can't have drawers or doors. That kind of sucks too.

Yeah... the Itso stuff is crap. I've had one of their storage cubes for just six months, and it's already falling apart.
