Something sporty, robust, maybe with an F1 or motor racing theme. Quartz is fine, a couple hundred bucks to a few hundred at most.

Anyone know of a good brand?

I only know Fossil. And I lost my Fossil. You can spend a couple hundred bucks on that brand and be happy.

there are about a million watch brands now.

if you are looking at something kinda cheap, they are all about the same.

if you want something unique, i have one of theses and its great, people who notice the dial ask questions, but most don't notice.

kinda digging this right now: reminds me of the dash on a car from the 30's.

and the dufa regulators.

also love the maratac stuff when its in stock, super high quality for the price.

a daily for me though is as simple as possible, looks like they no longer make this exact one, but similar.
absolutely nothing wrong with a citizen eco-drive. they have a lot of more flashy designs.

i am thinking of picking something nice up once our other property sells and my raise comes in.

Barf...

I'm kind of looking at one of these two. I like the chronograph and these are watches I can just beat around in.

I don't know how people can live without a smart watch. You know they exist now, right?

how can you live with it? the only time I ever found it useful was when skiing and wanting to find out where others were without taking out my phone. otherwise, a total waste of resources and a total pita to keep charged

@JulesMaximus
I love the blue and yellow.

someday ill have a Bell and Ross HUD or one of their other special addition watches.

Yeah, I'm kind of leaning toward the blue & yellow Citizen watch. It's a nice looking watch.

this is the seiko sportura I was thinking of https://www.ebay.com/itm/274955914035?epid=11032158620&hash=item4004a64b33:g:~VsAAOSwhaZeXTcU

this bulova curv is no longer made but to me it's the most versatile one, it dresses up and down and goes with any color

I don't know why people like them? My son wanted one so bad, so we got him the latest Apple Watch last year, knowing he wouldn't use it. Well, he used it for a few months. Now? It just sits on his night stand and he'll use it maybe a couple of days a month. Screen is way too small to do anything with and it's just a waste.

as usual, this is a good recommendation.

i'm gonna try to cut short a very long discussion, and just say that automatic watches are for ... i'm not sure we have a word for someone who is a nerd, a snob and an idiot all rolled into one.
Quartz is where it's at, and Casio + Seiko produce low-retail-cost watches that are an absolute joy to own. I own a sub-$100 Edifice that is still accurate to the second despite not having been set in 2 years. Once you have that kind of accuracy, everything else is just looks.

Damn. Haha. Some of us appreciate the mechanics and the complications. A nerd yes, a snob, no. The automatics I have owned were great. The Russian regulator I have is a bit of a novelty I'll admit, being hand wind.

I have zero interest in a watch I have to charge every day or so. I already have a phone and a tablet I'm charging daily so why on earth would I want something else that I have to charge?

Mine charges in less than 2 hours and lasts 2 days on a full charge. Do you wear your watches to sleep? If so, that seems kind of odd. If not, you put it on the wireless charger before bed instead of in your watch display case or whatever and it's charged when you get up. Characterizing that as a pain in the ass seems silly.

They are also infinitely more useful than anything other than a high end diving watch, maybe, if you dive a lot or something.

I've had one for maybe 2 years now and I can't count the number of times it's been way more convenient than digging my phone out of my pocket when busy with something else. Notifications right on my wrist? Yes please. Workout tracking? Yes please. Phone calls like James Fucking Bond? Yes please.

I have a couple of expensive automatics. Don’t regret spending the money on them one bit as I could easily sell them for what I paid for them, one has actually appreciated. And yes, I appreciate the mechanics and complications.

This watch will be worn on fishing trips and other places I will likely bash it up a bit. I have gotten used to wearing a watch and like having the convenience of being able to glance at my wrist to see the time. I’m not wearing an expensive automatic on a 26’ fishing boat offshore.

I like the Casio Edifice suggestion.

Can you wear your watch in the shower? What happens if you bash it on a bulkhead or a steel rail on a boat?

Yes and I wear it in the pool as well. I've banged it on a few surfaces including metal ones and there is no visible damage.

My workout is farm chores. bang that sucker against the loader bucket on the front of the tractor and we will see... I cant think of a single thing I need to know about instantly that comes up on my phone, maybe if the chickens could tell them they want extra snacks. phone calls? I take calls when I'm at my desk, otherwise people can go fuck themselves. leave a message, ill call you back when I am at my desk. you cant even take a dip without being connected to the world around you? damn. if i was worried about my watch buzzing i may run over a chicken, or the livestock guardian dog, or a squash or something.

I build my life so that its easily managed with a full time job and a farm. if you have built your life so that you need to be reachable and notifiable at a moments notice, that is your problem, and it does sound like a problem to me.

if I did not wear a watch, I would never eat lunch, for example. or I would not have any idea how long I had been fishing. or I may miss a meeting, but that buzzes the phone in my pocket and I know what it's for, and I don't need my watch to tell me. my citizen ecodrive has survived many years working on offshore oil rigs and rigs in the Simpson desert of Australia. I would say that's a good test of durability. The crystal is all scratched to hell and the band has been changed a few times. love a simple nato strap.

@JulesMaximus I was responding to the person saying that everyone who buys an automatic is a smug idiot. also, if i come to socal, will you come offshore fishing with us? i Love it, and we go every time we are on the coast.
