Looking for an LCD similar to BenQ G2400WD - any help appreciated

I read through the LCD thread and asked some questions without much luck. I hope a new topic is alright.

I was decided for a monitor in the $300-400 range, 24 inch if possible, used mostly for gaming. I know nothing about LCDs and my current monitor is a "high-end" NEC CRT 19"/flatscreen.

The LCD thread along with other review sites like Prad/vs/etc... had me decided on the BenQ G2400WD. Priced at $360 in the LCD thread - it was perfect.

But then I realized it is discontinued, so my quest begins anew. Plus, the price listed on most sites is more like $450, not $360 anymore.

Any advice for me? Here are some details on what I was hoping for:

-I have no HD player/blueray or anything like that. I guess that means HDMI connectors are not a must. Like I said I know nothing about LCDs.

-Some freedom of movement on the stand (rotate/swivel/etc...) would be nice.

-I mostly use my PC for gaming, on a 4870X2. So I kinda like the 1920 resolution/24" size. Also means I'd want lower input lag and no ghosting over other features, I guess?

Unfortunately, the 16:10 1920 x 1200 monitors are a dieing breed with the 16:9 1920 x 1080 monitors taking over. Are you dead set against the 16:9 monitors because there are many more options if you go that way?

I recently bought the Asus VW246H for my new gaming rig as this seemed to get great reviews and the price is right. The only downside is the stand is not adjustable but it wasnt a problem for me. This is 1920 x 1080 though. Ive had it for a month now and I love it. This is my 8th LCD but my first with no blurring during fast moving games. It goes for $220.

Asus also sells the VW266H which is 25.5" but it is 1920 x 1200 and its going for $270 after rebate right now. This has the same response time (2ms GTG) as my VW246H and receives great reviews as well.

For a TN panel in the 24" size, you would be hard pressed to spend the 3-400 you have for your budget. You can get a great gaming monitor for much less.

Edit: Forgot to mention that both of these monitors do have HDMI input and are HDCP compatible so they can be used for Bluray if you wish.

I've heard that Samsung 2443bw is similar, low input lag etc etc but there aren't any proper technical reviews on it. Same with LG L246WHX

I'd really like to buy one of those monitors but am worried about stuck pixels.

Can someone explain to me why 1920x1200 monitors are a dying breed? Is it just because of the term 1080p that is thrown around the main stream so much? I'll never buy a monitor with a resolution less 1920x1200. I'll go 30" if I have to!

Makes me wonder why we got 16:10 in the first place. I'm kinda attached to it now.

I remember going from my 4:3 crt to my first 16:10 lcd (1440x900). I think that it was a pretty big leap. I dealt with it and am now very comfortable at 16:10. I wonder if maybe they went 16:10 before 16:9 just because people weren't ready for it yet. Btw, OP, you probably will go crazy if you go directly to 16:9, I would try very hard to get a 1920x1200 monitor.

edit: I know that dell isn't the only place out there selling monitors, but if they are any indication the cheap 24" monitors are going towards 1080p while the nicer ones are still at 1920x1200. All the 1080p monitors tout the great benefits of great 1080p experience, while the nicer ones probably assume that people looking at them realize that 1200>1080.

Not sure I understand that. Why would I go crazy?

I am not set on 16:10 over 16:9. In fact I do not care - like I said this is my first LCD so I have no preference yet. I wanted the BenQ G2400WD because of 1)the great review and advice on this forum and 2)because it is the size I want/price I want.

I also am not sure about the resolution. I think I would be happy with anything be it 1920x1200 or 1680xwhatever. I just want a big ass widescreen with pretty colors and nothing weird (artifacts/ghosting/lag) that will make me regret my 19" CRT.

Can you explain why? I am reading good reviews, but why do you think it is so much better than other ones?

I am also considering the 22" 120hz one from Samsung (2233rz I think?). Don't care about the 3D but I read the 120hz does wonders in quality for game display. I wish I could see it next to a regular 60Hz screen though.

Thats a good LCD for 1920x1200,its really down to what he wants since its not clear if he would settle for 1920x1080 LCD (I know NEC have a IPS 23" 1920x1080 out) however for gaming then probably 120Hz or fast TN 60Hz will be his best choice.

A read of the official LCD thread might help too, lots of good input there.

Amazon has both.

Not only does Amazon have both, but it is free shipping and no taxes... My VW226H was delivered today and is sitting at my house waiting for me to get home.

Saying 'Manufacturing costs' isn't the full story. It's because they can make a smaller screen and sell it as the same thing. Extreme example. Selling 24" as 26". If manufacturers could get away with that, then real 26" wouldn't be made anymore

More like consumer stupidity. Or consumer trend/hype following

16:9 costs less because it's less pixels and often 0.5" smaller (e.g they say it's 24" but it's 23.5").

So manufacturers are happy with that, so then they slap on 'FULL HD!' and everyone's like..... Oooh it's clearly better than this non-HD monitor. Must have!

What does a 120hz (such as the Samsung 2233rz) bring to the table exactly? I figure the frame rate is twice as fast? Can the eye really capture 60hz and see a difference when brought to 120?

Does this affect game display quality?

If anyone has direct experience with a 120hz I would appreciate some input since I cannot find anywhere with a 120HZ screen on/demoing.

I just bought the Samsung XL2370 and I love it. It's 1920x1080 and has an LED backlight. It's extremely thin and stylish looking. The performance though is the best part, the colors are superbly bright and vibrant, and I've noticed a huge improvement in input lag from my previous Dell 2007FP. In fact, I noticed zero input lag with this thing.

I highly recommend it, and check out the review of it on CNET, it's a funny video clip!

yeah that's what I figured! That really pisses me off though. There should be at least one company that keeps the enthusiast in mind. It just doesn't make sense for all the people that bought REAL 24" monitors to ever go back to something with less pixels. Do you think 1920x1200 is going to go totally extinct?
