I am looking for a MMO to get into. I used to play wow and am not interested in it.

What are others that still have a large active player base?

Eve online has been very consistant through the years.

They just released a new free expansion.

Might be worth trying if you want to try something different, i think they have a free trial.

city of heroes/city of villains, good versus evil version is only 30 bucks. includes 1 free month of play. or what i did is get a free 14 day trial first at mmorpg.com, but i don't think they give out trials no more. play on the server "freedom", it is the most active out of all the servers. been maybe 2-3 weeks so far, and i absolutely loved it. played WoW before for a year, like it but quit eventually. played EVE for 2-3 months, or so, absolutely hated it. i think its because EVE is 99% PvP, and 1% PvE.

Lord of the Rings Online has been selling very well and has been receiving good reviews.

Unfortunately for me, Vanguard turned out to be a flop (I had been excited about it) and my friends that were going to play it with me bailed after seeing the betas, so I decided not to purchase the final game (I even had it preordered).

I bought Vanguard - I was disappointed.
I also played CoH and CoV a while back. CoH was pretty much my first MMO.

It isnt my thing. Ill have to give LOTR a shot.

If you almost liked WoW.. then maybe another MMO is for you. But if you didn't like it at all, I wouldn't bother with other MMO's because they really are all the same plus or minus a few gameplay features and with different graphics and storylines.

I got bored with LOTRO big time. Great graphics, great music but I get the 'been there done that' feeling.

CoH/CoV suck. Developers ruined that game the moment they decided no never add content to the game for lvl 50s. PVP isn't content... PVP zones aren't content... Capes and wings aren't content. Something to do besides play broken class PVP in stupid rehashed zones would have been nice.

WoW... well... probably the best ground based MMO. SWG is surprisingly ok right now although it has its days where you want to break the servers.

Guild Wars sucks... just because the story sucks... imo.

Eve online is good... but you gotta know... its PVP to the core. And right now there is a huge depressing war going on which started out ok but has dragged on way to long because of really poor territory control mechanics.

I play EVE mostly, SWG with m8s weekly too. Right now we are going to Hamachi Titan Quest up... and also Hamachi DotA up.

If you don't want to pay monthly and you don't care about MMO but want a good RPG... Titan Quest is cool.

Guild wars is a lot of fun, although some disagree on whether its actually an MMORPG

Its online gameplay... but its no more an MMORPG than WC3 is on Battle.Net or Titan Quest on Gamespy.

The graphics and sound were stunning. However, the Lineage 2 gameplay ( i like to jump around like an A.D.D. monkey thank you very much ) and the 'saw that coming' story left me wanting.

Final Fantasy 11 has been a wonderful experience. Its not a solo grind fest unlike other MMOs but is very party oriented like EQ and EQ2. There is an expansion coming out later this for for ff11 so there will be alot of players leveling lower level jobs so there will be alot more lower level parties to get your first job up. The economy has been stabilized after some horrible inflation created by currency sellers and buyers. Its not an easy MMO like WOW wich changes to a endgame game at cap. FF11 has great crafting and imho the best stories behind the quests.

If you're a brainy twinker then you just can't beat Anarchy Online. God the hours I spent working on how to get the next uber piece of equipment put on! It's part of the fun, making a plan, figuring out how to improve your character, carrying through. PvP is tiered so you don't have to level up to 220+ to get the most out of PvP. It's easily the most complicated MMORPG out there, and if you don't dig complexity, stay away. Had to give it up though. MMORPGs and my schedule are just not compatible.

City of heroes is great. I even went back to Star Wars Galaxies recently and am loving it. I was surprised to see such a large number of players.

I played EQ back in the day, and a bit of EQII a while go. I also tried out FFXI for a while, but for some reason couldn't get into it. The game just seemed so...empty. Perhaps I just had a bad experience.

OP: LOTRO is getting good reviews.

Also, you may like EQII if you want a sort of more difficult WoW.

If you want a different styled MMO, however, you may want to try EVE Online.

I believe you can find trials to all three of these MMOs; I have used a trial on both EQII and EVE Online, at least.

I never played Auto Assault, but I was bummed to see it die. I'd like to play a nicely done post-apocalyptic MMORPG. : / Back to more WoW for now..

Eve Online. I love this game. It takes a while to get started up. But when you get a good corp, and a good ship, you can have a blast.

This is my real advice, most people dont want to hear "wait 6-9 months" when asking for a game to play though

The developers have already proven in previous titles they know what fun pvp is.

That is what they said about vanguard....

I specifically downed Vanguard repeatedly because given the features and who was developing it, there was no way it couldn't suck. If you listened to everybody else that was your fault.

Warhammer is the only MMORPG that might be half worth your time and it's still over half a year away. Even then, it doesn't look that great.

The ONLY MMORPG out right now that I could possibly bring myself to play for any amount of time is City Of Villains. Travel powers, unique classes like the Mastermind and Scrapper, visually entertaining (for a while) group fights with all kinds of crazy super villains and their powers. At this point, what, four years after release, there is a lot of additional content and refinement that's been added to give you plenty of stuff to do. Groups were always quickly had last I played and the system reqs are low. Six months would be about as much time as it would take even a casual player to unveil the shallowness that lurks just below the fantastic glossy exterior of the game, but that will carry you over to WHO.

As for me, I'll play CS:S and wait for something good to be announced. All these games with their arbitrary goals are pathetic. Give me something personal, albeit virtual, to give a half a damn about. "Levelling" doesn't cut it. Helping a bunch of cloistered losers in my guild power level their alts doesn't cut it. Exploiting imbalances in PvP to pwnzer people doesn't cut it.
