Now, I am playing Command & Conquer: Tiberium Alliances and Battlefield 4. I played AOE.

When I installed the new 780 vid card last week, a few of my old games that I still played no longer work... 'Total Annihilation' (RTS) and 'Links 2003' ( great golf sim).

A buddy of mine recommended an older game, 'World In Conflict' which sounds quite good. However he said it may not run on Win 7 64 bit....

Any other great RTS games folks here like?

You should consider looking into the Wargame Series, Wargame: AirLand Battle came out in June this year, and the next one Wargame: Red Dragon should be out about that time next year. Its a very realistic game and the gameplay is very fun.

Here's a video of me playing with some friends if you want to see what its like to play:

Warhammer awn of war I & II and expansions
Company of Hero's- on of the very best

hard to tell, you need to list the ones you have played. Im a RTS fanatic and play them all, but prefer playing the AI to humans (i no longer have the skill to micro manage on the level the young people do)

Old ones: Red Alert II (and expansion) my be my favorite, but an odd one hardly anybody knows about

KOHAN: 1 & 2 Kohan 1 is a bit difficult late game and is pretty old school, Koahn 2 takes the step into 3D and is more forgiving.. both great.

Warhammer 40k Dawn of War I & II series for sure!
Best RTS i've played so far! Intuitive, awesome gameplay, cool "unique" mechanics...simply love it! And while killing enemies you gather loot to equip your dudes an XP to level them!

A great mix of RTS and RPG!

"World in conflict" should run on win7, it's not that old.

if you want some serious rts action with emphasis on the 'strategy' part, I suggest supreme commander (the "forged alliance" one, avoid supcom2). massive battles and complex technology tree + some serious, hmm, 'drive', if that makes sense in an rts game.

there's also an unofficial multiplayer lobby still active for the game with people playing. you will have to spend quite some time to catch up to them, though.

WiC was one of the first DX10 games on the market, it works just fine for me on windows 8 x64. Pick up the complete package with the Soviet Assault expansion pack, it's a fantastic game which looks and plays quite well to this day. Wargame is also an excellent choice, although it has a bit of a learning curve associated with it and can be overwhelming at times. AirLand Battle added Jets, in addition to ground vehicles and helicopters. Another solid choice for sure.

Just remembered that you can get the starcraft 2 trial version for free. From what I understand you get access to the arcade, which is a ton of great custom games.

Rise of Nations is freaking awesome. Its an older, 2D game. But still runs properly on modern systems.

Yea, Rise of Legends. It was mediocre at best. I wish they had made a true successor to Rise of Nations. Maybe that game just was so complete that it didn't leave room of a convenional expansion.

Edit: I guess you liked it. It was just OK at best to me. Certainly did not measure up to RON.

If you like Total Annihilation, Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance (it is a game made by some of the TA veterans) is a decent choice.
Also Planetary Annihilation (again made by TA and SupCom vets) is in the beta and is expected to be released in December.

Gotta echo some of the others. Definitely give Company of Heroes and WiC a try. Both are really satisfying as far as effects/explosions go.

I loved Red Alert and AoE as well. Still play AoE2 occasionally.

Another vote for World In Conflict, I first played it on Windows 7 64 years ago with zero issues.

Get the expansion pack with it as well. Adds several Soviet missions that really flesh out the story, well worth the money.

Company of Heroes is perhaps the most intense RTS I've played, but also the most fun. It truly has some epic moments.

There's Spring RTS, basically based on Total Annihilation with updated graphics, online as well. I liked it more than Supreme Commander.

Warzone 2100 is open-source too. Old but lots of fun.

Rise of Nations was awesome. Legends not so much...

There was also the Act of War: Direct Action & AOW: High treason RTS games... pretty good, except for trying to get them to run on windows 7/8. It can be done, but you really need to jump through hoops.

If you're looking for a slower-paced RTS with a deep and complex strategy that can be played in online multiplayer against human opponents but that isn't a button-mashing APM-based clickfest, I suggest Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion.
