Looking for Antivirus and Firewall

Don't know where the old security thread went...

Before I had to reinstall XP I was using Antivir and Kerio (version I don't remember exactly...2.15 comes to mind?). Though I installed Antivir and it won't leave me alone about updating... I update it everytime I boot up and then next time it tells me it hasn't updated in over 7 days, no matter how much I update it. So it has to go. What's a good antivirus that works great and uses little resources, AND isn't too annoying?

I liked Kerio pretty well, though I'm not sure it ever did anything. Still, I'd use it again if I could find a link for it anywhere. I googled it and could only find newer, non free versions. Wouldn't mind trying a different firewall this time around either. Thanks.

I personally use Comodo as my firewall and for the most part haven't run into any problems. I too use AntiVir and although I get updates nonstop, they don't bother me that much. An alternative I usually give my friends is Avast which I believe is highly recommended. I used to use AVG, but became disappointed with it and I believe its detection rating was lower than some of the others although I would still openly recommend it. Anyways, hope I've helped, I too wish I could find that security thread as its where I found the above four solutions initially.

Security sub-forum You can change the update notification to a very large number to keep from being pestered. Open the configuration tab, and make sure expert check box is ticked. Expand the general tree, and highlight security. You can change how many days it takes to notify if definitions are out of date, or turn it off altogether.

Btw, I use Windows built in firewall in XP and Vista.

I swear that sticky at the top wasn't there before and although it wasn't what I was looking for, it had a link to the thread I've always used: Freeware Security Applications.

Which after looking over more thoroughly is apparently dead and has an old version posted sooo, just look at the sticky in the security sub-forum.

As for anti virus try AVG or NOD32. These are the best two I have ever had. NOD is used at work and AVG at home. I know AVG is free, but not sure about the NOD, anyway these are worth a try.

AntiVir Personal Edition Classic is currently my free recommended antivirus for 32bit XP / Vista machines.

1. It uses a minimal amount of system resources / minimal amount of ram and will not slow you down.
2. Its detection rate is one of the best in the industry, outdoing all other freeware (to home users) antivirus applications and even NOD32.
