Looking for best cooler for PIII-700 FC-PGA. Any ideas?

I need some help. I am looking to buy a good cooler for my PIII 700 FC-PGA. I will probably be doing some light o/c, nothing major. So, I would like something that is quiet as well as a good unit for cooling. I have a CUSL2 MB in an Antec SX830 case. I have heard of some problems of some coolers not fitting with that MB. Any truth to this? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Crikey.. he's got a CUSL2. I know there's people running a GOrb on their CUSL2s.. they said it took a lot of effort though. And you have to be careful not to chip anything in the process.

The capacitators are pretty close to the socket. The real problem, in my opinion, is that ASUS put traces directly under the notches on the socket, so if you slip with the HSF clip (like I did), you'll inevitablly scratch them or take some out altogether.

I have an Alpha PAL35T on mine, it went on WAY easier than the stock Intel hunk-o-junk. I almost broke 5 bones gettin the Intel on till I got the aplha in the next day and had it in in about 20 seconds It clears the capacitors on my CUSL2 with plenty of room to spare as well. ColdCpu.com has them in stock last I checked

just curious, what kind of fans do you guys have on your alphas ?

i've got a 700e on a cusl2, and was going to get a $24 alpha PAL35 heatsink alone, and grab a panaflo 60mm fan + grille

 

I got a PAL6035 on mine.
Slick as all get out, easy on, easy off.
you will love it.

The Gorb is a very well designed heat sink and losing out to Alpha FCPAL-35t by only 2-4 degrees. The success is due to the good heat sink and mounting mechanism design. Thermaltake also uses the best thermal compound available. (The white staff shipped with the HSF.)

I also found that the Gorb twisting clip to be better than the Alpha clip. The Gorb mounts perfectly flat on the CPU on every MB and slotket that I tried. On the other hand, the Alpha clip mounts slightly uneven on some slotket if the tabs on the CPU socket is not at the correct location. On those slotket, the Alpha actually performs slightly worse than the Gorb.

Tyical performance of P3-700 oc to 980MHz at 1.65 Vcore: (Deg above case temperature)
Golden Orb: 20F idle, 38F full load
FCPAL-35t: 18F idle, 34F full load

thanks for that heads up. i too had a heck of a time getting that retail HS/FAN on. i have been holding out on getting another cooler because i was afraid it would be even worse.

i'm not even going to mention how hard memory is to get seated nowadays. just push until you think you are breaking the motherboard.
