as the title says, looking for a cheep SMP setup. Any ideas on how to mod this setup:

$100 = Tyan Tiger 230D (Via Apollo Pro 133a) - dual CPU
$130 = 2x 667mhz P3's
$40 = 256MB PC133 CL2 Crucial SDRAM
$60 = Matrox G400 32mb AGP
$60 = Antec sx640 ATX case
$30 = Intel Pro100 10/100 PCI NIC
---------------------------------------------------
$420 total system cost

I'm looking for a nice linux server, but trying to stay under $400. I know that antec case is a little expensive, but it's to look nice next to my sx1240 (which has the same styling, just is a lot bigger). Also the reason for such a nice video card is that I do want some quality video out of this box too (2D only though, but 1600x1200 through a KVM = a need for good quality).

But my main question is: will celeron 800's go SMP? If not, what's a good substitute?

Updated to have a P3 instead of a Celeron & cut RAM to 256

Sorry, but the Celeron 2s will not do SMP. You may be able to pick up a couple P3s for slightly more $$. Also, Durons will do SMP and if you can pick up a Tyan Tiger MP for around $200 it would be about the same cost for a faster setup.

I'm not too sure on the Tiger MP & linux though. I'm a linux newbie, and I don't want any compatibilty issues, hense the complete Intel setup. I looked & for similar P3's will be about $200 for the setup, putting me over budget by like $100. Should I just go with celeron 533a's?

The Celeron IIs or "A" are not SMPable either, far as I know. Only the orignal celerons are I believe.

Yeah, I'd go with the TigerMP and Duron combo. It allows for a much wider range upgrade path later on. I haven't heard of an compitiblity issues with Linux and the Tiger MP. AFAIK, Dual AMD's works very well with Linux.

but where am I going to find a duron 700 for $15? I'm really trying to get this under $400. I agree with the more upgrade options, but I'm not planning on upgrading this system for a while (at least 3 years).

unfortunatly I have to figure in the cost of a KVM & network switch with this as well....that will raise costs a bunch (those dang KVM's are expensive, especially if you want quality cables!).

Dual Durons would be cool but there no way he could stay under $400 and build a whole system when the motherboard alone cost over $200. If I were you I would drop the Tiger 230D and pick up a nice ECS D6VAA for about $60. The D6VAA is a very stable board and as got nothing but great reviews(here's a link to a bunch of them)plus is dirt cheap.

Currently, it's hard to have a quality (performace) SMP system and stay within $400. I have to ask... why SMP? You would have a much better server with a single 1GHz Athlon and it would cost less too. What is the server going to be used for? Are you really going to tax the system that much to need a dual CPU setup? 1GHz might even be overkill for what you need to run.

I currently run a Linux server on a Duron 600... running VNC, X, CounterStrike, SendMail, FTP, SSH, Apache, and MySQL. Even at 600Mhz the system isn't taxed running all of that... Most of the time it's idle.

1GHz Athlon 266MHz FSB: $87 shipped
ECS 7KS5A: $67 shipped

That's $24 more then two P3 667's

Iwill have a Dual S370 DDR board, theDVD266, which I believe was AT's top pick when they did a dual S370 compo not long ago. Lowest price is $134 on pricewatch. Newegg don't have 'em new, only refurb for $140.

I don't know what you're going to do with the system, but IMO, a cheap dually is an oxymoron!!!
cuz dual setups give little performance boost at a big big price. usually for people with too much money to spend! . surely, a dual 667 would theoretically give you a total of 1.333ghz, but in reality, it'll be producing the same speeds as an 800mhz single chip.

why is it you don't want a 1.4ghz setup with AMD and ECS mobo? cuz a single 1.4ghz would give you the full 1.4ghz power!!!

Yeargh... DON'T SAY THAT - I'm perched perilously close to going to a dually XP1800 here, and I sure as hell don't have too much money to spend... too little if anything

Gotta resist the damn upgrade bug... need vaccine... need to be robbed

If you leave your door unlocked this afternoon I'll talke care of that

I know a 1.4 + SIS735 setup would be the fastest & cheepest option, but I'm kinda going for a dual setup for basically the fun of it. I really don't need anything more than a p2 233 for this, but was gonna try having some performance with it.
