Looking for database templatea

I'm looking for a open source product/solution that catalogs products and tracks orders for a very small retail/wholesaler. I realize I'm going to need to so some programming (I'm a newb when it comes to DBs). I've done several googles but nothing clear cut has come up.

Is there any really cheap/free templetes for this type of business? I've seen oscommerce and other shopping carts programs, and I plan to try them out, but I'm looking for something single user and where I can find out who owes what, Peachtree and Intuit's again somewhat fits the bill, but I don't think they don't let me add product data like clothing sizes.

Is there a better solution than Postgre/Mysql and an GUI Admin program or write a program in VB/C? Any Templates for the customer/product/ordering databases? (not sure about termonology)
