Looking for feedback on these new Seagate hdd

So, while doing some research for my upcoming IVB build...I came across these new 1 TB platter drive from Seagate..

Is anyone using it already? how does it hold up? and how reliable are seagate drives these days?
I've been using WD for the past 4 years..

Btw I'm interested in getting either 1TB or 2TB drive...

I purchased two of those 3TB Seagate drives (with three 1TB platters) in Dec and both drives failed within a week with loud clicking sounds. I ended up with two 2TB Hitachi 7K3000 drives and haven't had any issue with them since they were installed in Jan.

I have no recent personal experience with Seagate drives but I read about a lot more failures with Seagate than I do with WD. For this reason I stick with WD and it's been a long time since a WD drive died on me.

If you are using the HDD purely for storage instead of an OS drive, I don't believe things like platter density will make a big difference. I would go for the appropriate WD drive for your needs.

I have considered getting some of those Seagate 1TB platter HDDs, but I decided against it for two reasons:

1) The Seagates are only rated for 8-hour per day use, as compared to Hitachi 5K3000 and 7K3000 models, which are rated for 24-hour per day use (i.e., continuous use). Even though I am not planning on using them 24/7, I prefer to own HDDs that are at least rated for continuous use.

2) The Seagates only have 1 year warranties

My advice, if you need to buy now, is to get Hitachi 5K3000 or 7K3000 HDDs. If you can wait 3-6 months, I'm hoping Toshiba or Western Digital release some decent 1TB platter HDDs soon.

I've been using the Hitachi 2TB 7K3000 drive 4 months now (two of them in the same PC) and haven't had any issues. Very quiet and good speeds.

It was $199/each when I purchased in January, but is now down to $139. They did have an extra $20 off coupon code for the past few days, but looks like that has ended.

I've been using a 2tb wd green wd20ears for about 14 months now, no problems so far. However, it has definitely been "light usage only" as my OS has been on an ssd. In fact, I think I'm going to transition from "games/data/pictures/videos/music/all storage" to just pictures and music now that I've got more ssd space available.

You are misinterpreting the data. A power on-hours number of 2400 is a real world example relating to data integrity figures. In other words, the average HDD customer will use their drive 2400 per year. Hitachi assumes their customers will use their HDD 24/7.

BTW, some Seagate drives do have 2-year warranties.

Cheap, comes in retail dress, and no tossing around by angry UPS guys.

I was thinking of picking one up to use until the WD Black comes down in price, then cloning it and socking it away as a backup. I currently have a WD 640g Blue that is stuffed to the gills

I've been using that same 3TB Seagate in a server 24/7 for a few weeks now. No failures, however I do hear a loud click when it parks and unparks the head so I'm still waiting to see if it'll fail...

Hate to break it to you, but those drives do not come with a 5-year warranty anymore. Nor are they 3Gbit/sec like the ad copy states. That is old spec info, and not valid anymore.

I think that they are 1 year warranty now.

Yes they do, some of the BB stock is from before they changed their warranty policy.

I purchase a 3 TB (7200 rpm, 6 git/s) version for $180 3 weeks ago that says 5 year warranty on the box, manual, and even through Seagates serial checker on their website.

Just check the box before you pay when going to your local BB.

Feels good to be covered until 2017

Seagate was the top company and WDC was second. But once Seagate hopped into bed with Maxtor, now their drives are being created in Maxtor thus its a horrible horrible drive,, Never get Seagate / Maxtor ,,,,,,, That is what you get,, bad quality my friend. Buy a WDC for heavens sake!
