I've been in the mood for a space game like Freelancer (Not EVE please.) I seriously don't understand why that didn't end up with a sequel the game was fun as hell and had a lot of playability and the standard WASD + Mouse shooter controls were awesome... I'm hoping to find a similar action based space game like that.

Is the X3 series any good???

Been on the fence getting the 2-pack on Steam for $54.

I'm probably the only person still actively playing X2, so I'll definitely vouch for it.

I remember playing Freelancer and having a great time, but always wishing it was a deeper experience. As in: owning property and fleets of ships. The whole "one ship at a time" thing felt extremely shallow.

X2 gives you that in spades. believe it or not, I've probabaly played 150-200 hours by now and I haven't even finished the main plot. I sort of abandoned it to become a mogul.

As far as space combat goes, Freelancer is a little more smooth and arcadey. X2 has a stiffer flight model. I still have fun with it though. It's very difficult and very satisfying to defeat a larger more powerful ship. To do so you pretty much have to have missle equipped wingmen, though.

Shit in X2 is EXPENSIVE. You'll play for a long time before you get powerful ships and own a bunch of factories.

One of the great joys of X2 is figuring stuff out. Ex. - With the exception of Freelancer I was new to the whole space sim genre. So when I finally bought some wingmen I only purchased enough speed upgrades to allow them to keep up with me. My novice ass figured speed upgrades are expensive, and would be wasted on escorts.

But they kept on getting blown up during battles with F3 class pirates; I simply figured I wasn't strong enough to take out certain ships. But then it dawned on me: my F5 wingmen's biggest advantage is speed; If I limit them to my F4 velocity they're sitting ducks. The next time I purchased new ones I maxed out their speed. The battles against F3 class ships were still tough after that, but I started winning some of them. As I said before - very satisfying.

Every time I tried to get into X3 I came away disappointed. Is the most recent version (Terran something) worth getting?

I've installed X3 once and played it for a total of about 30 minutes so I have no idea how it compares to X2. I don't even own Terran Conflict.

I'm sort of waiting to get bored with X2 before I start X3 for real (now that I know how to play).

Thanks for the info..

Is the X2/3 series a kb/mouse friendly game?

Also after I made this post I saw the post about the steep learning curve. Is it just not explained well.

I think you can play it entirely kb/mouse.

I've had the most fun using a 12 button, dual analog gamepad (and using the kb for other basic things).

You do have to play with the manual open in front of you for quite a while until you get used to all of the controls.

As far as the learning curve goes: buy low and sell high.

Cool. I'll bypass the Steam purchase and get a hardcopy so I get the book. I also saw it uses that TAGES DRM which turned me off initially when I was in a buying mood the other day and almost bought it on Steam. I don't understand why a game tied to an account will only allow 4 re-installs... doesn't make any sense. The whole sweetness of Steam is having all your games right there... install your OS kick off Steam go to bed, next day all your games are installed/patched etc... no disc swapping etc. But the TAGES thing sounds like a big turn off.

Yeah you might wait for Jumpgate Evolution or Black Prophecy. MMO's, but definitely where the action will be. X3 is a beautiful game, but it is really solo EVE with much better combat. I think it's a fantastic game, but I tend to get bored quick with solo games. If Black Prophecy ever gets a publisher, it'll be the game to watch for.

I was a terrible WoW addict and could have easily been one of those news features on crazy dude "never came out of his room for 2 weeks, wife can't find him last seen at starbucks with laptop on Raid" so I'm a bit shy of MMOs now. LOL

I got hot wife and wasted 4 years of her 'mid 20's' playin WoW!

But I'll check em out anyhow thx!

While I have very little to add here, I'm going to have to ask for pics.

LOL, long story there. But highly doubtful as sex was still frequent and damn goood. But the neglect factor was def sinkin in and once I saw her making myspace pages and reaching out for attention and seeing all the signs of a marriage starting to fail... I quit cold turkey and never looked back ... (LIE took 3x to quit LOL) ... Now I'm WoW free for a good year+ and we are back to gaming together like when we met playing more games like TF2 on a much more casual level and back to the best friends we always were. This story could have played out much differently.

But back on topic... I bought X3:TC at Best Buy last night and once I got started it was like OMG wtf! Eventually I had this guy start a tutorial with me and then he ejects a debris container and says "destroy it" well smart game... I don't have any weapons on my ship because I picked Merchant history and apparently the game doesn't give you weapons or something. Still looks pretty sweet. That computer chick's voice is cool but grows old fast every click "ARGON XXX STATION!" "ARRRRRGON BUSTER TRACE BUSTA 2000!" LOL.

But this game def looks to have a lot to offer, can't wait to give it a solid learn.

I suggest printing out a good map. I printed one out on photo paper on accident. Sure looks nice though.

X3....I don't know if I am just missing something obvious but ....

I took the manual to work skimmed through the whole damn thing while building servers bla bla bla... and felt ready to play when I got home.

Fired up the game... understood more how to get around BUT....

4 HOURS LATER... still haven't gotten 1 thing accomplished, not one trade, had to restart the game like 5 times because of purchasing something and not finding ANY station in the fukn far reaches that would actually buy my fukn freight.

I started looking at guides only 1 hour into the frustration and every guide seems to just want to walk you to where free ships are and shit. I want to play the damn game but if playing the game means putting SETA on 10 and mapping out each and every sector... this seems more like a waste of my time than actually playing a game.

Even tried to do the 7 trades that were in the manual but couldn't even get the first one done because when I finally found my way to the first spot to sell, LOL, they didn't even give me permission to land, didn't want anything to do with me.

I chucked the damn manual against the wall and went back to TF2. No game should take that much time to figure out!!!

It's too bad there's not an X2/X3 boxed set out there that you could have gotten so you could try both.

From everything I've read X2 is more accesible than X3 (and has a comprehensive tutorial).

This.

Very Freelancer-esque. Probably a shade behind what Freelancer was but a good game, great fun... only one ship but its modifyable several different ways.

Cheap, cheerful and will keep you sated for a while.

I never had any trouble with X3 so I'm not sure what you are dealing with.

hehe it was a patience problem... a lot of things in X3 are not very well explained very well, next to no tooltips that provide REAL game statistical information on an item, save for the female voiceovers just giving a generalized idea what it is. 1/2 the ship upgrades have next to no explaination whatsoever.

I took a solid night playing it again and now I am having a great time. I have 2 super freighters trading and am doing combat missions.

The part that's still puzzling me is how to get stats on items for sale such as weapons. Where do you actually find out how much damage they do, energy usage and all that BEFORE buying them???? Same thing with ships there are next to no stats on anything until after you've gambled and bought something.

Other than that really having a good time except for frequent autopilot end-games.

And how the heck do I break myself from doing ORE runs? Seems so easy to just run ore over and over.
------------------------------------

I did buy Darkstar One as well thanks for that suggestion it also looked pretty fun.

You know I haven't played X3 in a while, but I never did ore runs so I have no idea. I traded in energy mostly, and then set my trader to auto and went off and did combat. If you manage to get the enemy to eject, you get to keep the ship. Easy money, and eventually you can build your own fleet of combat vessels.

THANK YOU! I finally got to sit down and play DS1 and OMG this was the insane space shooter action pack I was looking for... simple and fun. Every piece of the game is fun. Love it. And $9.99 to boot.

X3 I like too, I spent about a few nights getting to about $3million and a few frieghters and wings of ships but it's too damn Cerebral... so much micromanagement and the options buried under menus can make it so painful to do many things at once....but still it's fun and satisfying too in a different way. What kills X3 for me is the lack of a thruster... the lack of it makes combat so unbelievably boring...

1. Independence War 2 > Freelancer
2. Freespace series > Everything
3. X Series decent if you can survive the learning curve
4. Nexus: Jupiter Incident
