I'm using compaq presario 7478.(k6-2 533mhz, 320 pc100 ram, 4X?X24cdrw, ?XDVD, 20gHD, and so on)

thinking about building a new system but never done it before.

so I don't want to spend too much money since this is my first try.(may fail and blow money, hope not)

my use of computer is mostly running some applications for trading stocks, surfing the net, and making music cds.

here is my problem. I have no idea which processor and mobo I need to choose, since I want my system upgradable for years.

what is your thought?

oh 1 condition to decide processor and mobo: must be faster than what I got.

OK, first, you will want to go AMD.. best bang for BUCK!

for waht you will want to do... a Athlon 1ghz would suit you nice... about 100$

for your mother board... ECS.. about 70 $ this board will be upgradeable for Several years...

and then you will want some nice DDR ram from crucial about 70 for 512!

no im not sure but do u want and entire makeover... besides monitor and stuff... u will need a new case and PSU ... but i would say for 500$ you could be set...

if you want a fast system on the cheap, get a SIS mobo and a 1.4ghz athlon t-bird, along with 512MB DDR ram.... with that combo you will have a rather speedy core to a system for under $300

Research AMD CPU and ECS motherboard. Seems to be the best way to go. As for building your new PC, you will find expert help from the extremely friendly and very helpful people here at AnandTech! This place is great and will continue to be. I have built a few full blown AMD based PC's on Abit KT7A mobo for very reasonable pricing (Under $900 including EVERYTHING.) The ECS mobo gets great reviews, is upgradeable and very reasonable. You could also wait for shipping versions of mobo's based on the nVidia nForce chipset (read review HERE ) This should prove powerful and inexpensive...

I did some research for othe parts(dvd, cdrw, video card, etc) and found them mostly.(thanks)

since this is my fist try, I don't know how to overclock. so I'll not overclock.

also need a fast system but more importantly stable and reliable.

if I go with duron 800mhz as a start, can I use DDR ram?

is it related to mobo not processor?

but for the maxiam result for P2100 DDR, what is a minium processor?
