Looking for Java help...

Ok, let me just start by saying i'm java dumb.


Can anyone tell me or possibly send me to a site that will help me turn a spreadsheet into an app with a pretty little display?

it has 3 cells for input.
1 specific result given by a formula using a set amount and 1 of the input cells.
and then generates a list of 31 rows x 5 columns (in xls)

can anyone point me in the right direction and or tell me what i'm getting myself into. would it be brutally hard to whip something like this up.


I have a xls spreadsheet with working formulas i'm just trying to get this into a nice little application.

you MIGHT be able to find something on hotscripts.com, but with that much detail about what you need, it will be hard to find that in specific.

All in all, that wouldn't be TOO hard to code...

3 cells for input would be easy...
running a few formulas would be easy...
writing to an xls file would be a little tricky, as you would have to set up the program to write the details of the xls file. It might be easier to have it right to a csv file (comma seperated values) and open that in excel... but I'm not sure if you can do a specific number of columns/rows with that. (in any case, a csv file would be good for testing it, then once you know the rest of it works, set up the xls)


Do you know ANYTHING about java? depending on how important this is to you, someone on the forums may be willing to code it for a small fee.

Oh, and does it HAVE to be java, or would C++ work. C++ MIGHT be a little easier not only to code but to use.

How much programming expirence do you have? If you know the basics of any C style language, then coding this up in java should take no more then a day including the time to go through the Swing toolkit tutorial (java's built in GUI toolset) at java.sun.com. If your fairly adept any any C style language, it should take no more then a couple of hours including going through the tutorial and learning the syntactic differences between your language and java. Matter of fact, I think some of the projects in the tutorial are harder then the project your suggesting . . .

Thanks I got that. my programming expirence doesn't exist. I've done alittle HTML. I've got the files and know how to run a java file that I can create in notepad now I just need to teach myself how to write up a program that will run.

If you have no programming experience, and specifically no Java programming experience, what you're looking for isn't something you can throw together in a day.

If you're dead-set on trying to do this, however, I suggest you look at the Sun website Java Tutorial to learn the basics of the language, and then the Swing Tutorial, which will introduce you to the standard Java GUI widgets and programming patterns.
