Hi, I'm looking for a high quality Multi-function printer with a scanner, a copier, and faxing built in. I would be mostly printing word documents and low operating cost is prefered. Any suggestions? Thanks

If you don't need color look for a monochrome Laser based printer.

If you you need color look for a Canon inkjet with a MP# higher than 500 that use the CLI-5&8 cartridges---which OEM cartridges to OEM cartridges will offer the lowest printing cost of
any currently produced inkjet all in one.

But if you really want to save on printing costs----go for the Canon MP 780 which is no longer produced---a few are left on store shelves---and many are still available on ebay new and refurbished. They use the non chipped BCI-3&6 cartridge line---which makes refilling very easy, and prefilled third party cartridges are readily available for it dirt cheap. Wish I had a MP780---but I still limp along on my one generation back MP 730---which is rock solid reliable.

L-L beat me to it. About the only other one I might recommend, and only for the low cost consumables are the Brother AIOs. They also use passive ink tanks which are readily available as inexpensive clones and refillable. For Word documents, their output might approach a Canon's if you carefully choose the paper. Photo printing is another story. All of the new series Brothers (MFC-200, 400, 600, etc.) use the same print engine - pay more get more features, better scanner, auto sheet feeder, etc., but the output will remain the same. A redeeming factor is the networking as Brothers have the best networking of any AIOs - all have at least 10/100 Ethernet connections and some have integrated wireless. Almost all features can be networked including fax. This makes the drivers a bit more complicated to install than others, but it may be worth it. They have frequent sales and rebates. I think all of them have a built in modem so they can function as a fax while totally disconnected from the PC. Some have a local phone handset. I'd probably buy the 640 if it was necessary.
. But I'd probably choose one of the current series of Canon MPs. Cone tanks for the 8 series will be out shortly and http://www.Swiftink.com, the "Official Ink Supplier to Anandtech" (per their ad in the Hot Deals section) will be among the first to stock them. You will have to transfer the chip from an empty OEM tank to the clone for now. They say that clone 8 tanks with their own chips will come along as will the cloned 5's - it's been nearly a year to get the cloned 8's so I wouldn't hold my breath. In the meanwhile, the OEM tanks are refillable and some resellers have the special refill ink for them. Not as easy to refill as the old 3 and 6 tanks, but probably still easier than most others.
. If you can find a factory refurb or new 780 as L-L mentioned, the ink savings alone will pay almost any premium above the current models. Not to mention the minimal hassle.
. So, in order of preference:
1- Canon Pixma MP-780 almost regardless of price (though someone bought one at a Staples on Long Island for $39. not too long ago on a manager's clearance special). So dogging it to every big box store (or any other type of store that might have stocked one) within 100 miles might be worth the effort.
2- Current Pixma MP model that uses the 5 and 8 series separate tanks.
3- Brother MFC-640 (has some letters after the 640 but I can't remember them right now - old timer's syndrome, doncha know...).

I love AT.

Thanks you guys, I've made up my mind. I'll be on my way to pick up a Canon MP780. It will serve me well for years to come.

I found out that it's extremely hard to get one of these in Canada. I tried many searches on google, and I've found no store that carries them in stock. Guess my best chance is to wait for it to come up on ebay.

Don't forget to pick up a CD Tray off Ebay (same tray as the IP4000, IP5000, etc) if you burn a lot of CDs/DVDs.

Well worth the $25.00 to be able to produce photo quality labels on printable DVDs and CDs.

Bumping this old thread because I fail to find any MP780s anywhere :|
What is the best alternative as of now?

The options haven't changed. Just re-read the above. Though there are some new Canons that just came out - go to usa.canon.com and check them out. As L-L said, get one that uses the 8 and 5 series tanks. You may have to refill the tanks yourself until the clone tanks become widely available.

Or you could check out the HPs but once again you'd have to refill them yourself to get the costs down. And the HP carts are much more "fun" to refill than the Canons. ;-) (where fun = PITA)

zepper i've seen you mention that HP printers are excellent.
What would you prefer between Canon and HP. I only have bad experiences with HP and looking for a change.

I'm a Canon fan until they threw a monkey wrench into the gears with the current chipped tanks. Even the chipped tanks are fairly easy to refill - easier than any integrated head cartridge. If I was looking for a new printer, I'd probably grab an iP4300 (just came out) and keep my fingers and toes crossed that the clone 8-series tanks come in soon at swiftink.com. Meanwhile be prepared to refill if you want reasonable costs. see nifty-stuff.com for tips and links on refilling the new chipped tanks and see the offer from swiftink at the top of the Hot Deals section for some info on clone tanks for the new Pixmas.

Unfortunately, if you choose to go with OEM tanks, the cost will be $75. or more for each full cycle of new tanks. - costs $85. +s/h right now for the 4300 printer with a full set of tanks. At that rate, instead of buying tanks, I'd be buying new printers. Use the tanks and closet the printers until clone tanks become available. Then sell them on eBay with a set of clone tanks.

Good luck on the MP780 - eBay, craigslist, postaroo, etc. are about the only places those things might be found any more. I don't recommend AIOs in general. There are new i6000D units available - check Froogle (I've recently seen $100. shipped for new ones). Text won't be as crisp as the 780, but probably adequate for most people. And get a separate scanner. A program like Smith Micro's HotFax Message Center 6 along with your fax/modem will take care of your faxing needs. If space is limited, buy or build a stack rack for them.

Hey zepper, I managed to find the last MP780 in a future shop 20 miles from my house. *DAMN* Now that I look on ebay I find a MP780 for 235US BIN. Oh well, was gonna ask you if the CISS ink is really high quality like the seller claims it is. I'm unable to buy from swiftink.com because I reside in Canada. Thanks man

Have no idea about CISS. How much do you intend to print? I would think a CISS system would be gross overkill for a typical user. Canon doesn't spec a duty cycle for thier inkjet printers but I'm fairly sure it's less than 3000 sides per month.

Next time Swiftink has a sale I could send you a stock of them - air letter post doesn't care whether you're across the lake in Toronto or across the continent as far as cost.

My first set of ink tanks for my iP3000 lasted me 4 or 5 months... Besides black, I tend to use more magenta and yellow...

Has anyone tried the CISS in the MP780?

Im curious how it will be set up if the tanks are on the outside? As this is a Multi Function machine, its not as simple as opening the top cover to print.

To GLO,

Short answer yes---for more information go to steves digicam forums or the nifty stuff forums for more detail--search posts made by websnail.
As I recall its possible but not easy.

If you don't need color, then this is the multi-function printer to get: Samsung SCX-4521F

If you only want color for photos, it is best to use a thermal dye transfer printer. Canon has a new one for $99. Ink jets can't compete for quality on 4x6s.

I already have a Brother MFC6650MC which is a great Laser MFC, but recently (a few months ago) bought the MP780 to print DVDs and CD (whilst replacing my HP720C which still works a treat, and old scussi scanner)

to GLO,

My printing volume is low enough where I would have no use for a CISS. When a tank goes low, I just pop in a pre-filled replacement---then refill the empties at my leisure. Its cheap and easy to have spare sets.
