Looking for new LCD monitor

Like the title says I am looking into buying a new LCD within a few months.
I would like a 17" (no bigger) hopefully for under $400.
I do some gaming, so response time is a factor but not a huge one (the 25ms time on this one seems fine for me).
I would prefer an 8-bit for color depth

What do you guy suggest?

Im running off a 9800pro 128mb, will post other specs if necessary.

AVIDAV / Jetway 17" 1280x1024 with DVI. $250 from NewEgg. It's only 6-bit, but it's probably the best 6-bit LCD on the market. Bight screen, most of the reviews have been glowing.

Sony SDM S73. 16ms and only $300 from Newegg. I have 3 of them and my gf has 1 too. Not a single dead pixel on any of them. EDIT: Actually I'm going to take that back. The recent batch I've bought are a bit messed up. Look for my RANT thread.

I'm in the same boat. I'm thinking about heading to BB right now and getting the Samsung 712N. Its got a good response time (12ms), and people seem to like it. I don't know if it's 8 or 6 bit though, and it does not have DVI. It's $330 after MIR (and another %10 off with the cupon I have.)

its 6-bit which is really the only problem with it from what I've read. That kinda turned me off to it. (anandtech has a review of it on its monitor section, go check it out)

EDIT: oops, i am talking about the 172x, ill check out that samsung and the others.

Any other suggetions or info on those monitors mentioned?

I highly recommend getting a display with DVI. If you compare the two, DVI is always crisper. In my case, I use a PowerBook when I'm on the road or doing presentations (or editing home movies / photos), going to a non-DVI LCD is very hard on my eyes for the first few minutes. I can really pick out all of the imperfections of the VGA signal. Even on a high quality LCD. DVI is just so much better. Read Anand's 19" LCD roundup and Tom's 17" roundup for more on DVI v. non-DVI.

Play the Dellf game at www.dell.com and you could win a 25% off coupon. I also had a $40 off $350, so I got the 19" E193FP LCD for $360. (tax and free shipping)

It took a while to win it.

I second the suggestion for a DVI panel. I'd play the Dellf game (or look at certain other sites) to find a 25% off an LCD code and get a Dell 1703fp. I bought two recently and have been very happy (8bit color depth, DVI and VGA).

Speaking of the DVI and VGA debate about clarity, I found something really interesting when moving my two LCDs around--there was a STARK difference between the DVI and VGA ports on my Ti4200, but shockingly enough, running one on my Matrox G450 (on VGA) looked as good as the DVI on the Ti4200. I suppose that whole "Matrox's 2D is awesome" statement really does hold some water.

NiKeFiDO, thanks for creating the whole under 19" LCD topic. Too many people were interested in the giant LCDS - what about us normal people ;-)? I've read a lot of different articles, and a lot of people have said those Samsung ones [obviously whichever one is the best right now] are the better ones, but I've also heard of some mystical Hydis monitor of some sort, which some gamers swear by. however, my best advice is to go to a store nearby, such as Microcenter, and look at the monitors they have. Although it may be a better choice to buy a monitor via the 'net because it'd be cheaper, you'll have a much higher risk of getting a dead pixel. if you go to the store, and if you see one you want, you can always ask them to take it out and plug it in, to see if it has a dead pixel or not. and if it does/or they don't let you, just walk away. there's nothing better than having consumer power ;-). just be sure to make the purchase that you can soundly say that you actually wanted it. it's a lot of money, and it's something that you're going to stare at everyday for a while.

km23 - thanks for the idea on the dellf game - i got the 25% off coupon after only 3 tries. might severely influence my decision making process on the monitor ;-).

I'm a CRT man myself, though I work with many LCDs during the day. The only LCD I've ever bought was an NEC LCD1715. I actually took a PC to the store so I could try it out and run several tests before I agreed to buy it. (I later learned that it worked best with high end graphics or with Matrox G450... without DVI, the VGA image was blurry and sort of washed out when used with lower end cards).

If the store will let you, take your PC along and give it a try. The display models are usually run thru a splitter and at some non-optimal resolution.

re-edited....

So I "won" the 25% off Dell monitor code. Anyone know the best to get in terms of response time and (hopefully) 8-bit color?
I would prefer 17"
The dell specs are kinda lacking, anyone know more to help me make some decisions?

edit again: well, now i have no life, and three 25% codes...could i trade someone for a stacbkable $45 off code (or something close to that?)

also, plz keep coming with good info on monitor choices!

apparently you can't buy the 710T with the 25% off coupon. there goes my plan of getting a cheap monitor. anyone else have a solution?

i just searched dell for that and it isnt showing any monitors with that number. Actually it isnt showing any LCDs.
Of course it also took a few trys becuase "We cant process your request at the moment, please try again later"

Typo there or is Dell screwing itself with Dellf?

EDIT the 1704fpv is there...its the Ultrasharp and it looks good BUT it has a 25ms response time, which i'd like to avoid if possible (please correct me if I am wrong).

I got the 25% lcd coupon and i put the 1704FPV in my cart but when i try and put the code in it says: The following coupons have been entered but require additional information or do not meet eligibility requirements. Click "View Details" link(s) for more information. Dell EPP/FSS customers: 25% off any Dell Flat Panel

Anybody know why that is? Thanks

from what i gathered before, apparently the coupon only works for Educational or Student Sales. That, or the coupon doesn't work for that monitor, b/c it already has a discount. read the fine print - it's dumb and confusing.

edit: i just did the same thing that you did, and i got the coupon to work. interesting.

I would buy nothing other than a Samsung LCD flat panel, even if it costs more. Samsung quality is far superior to anything else on the market. Any price premium is well worth it. I've owned 17", 18", 19", 21", and 24" LCDs and they all rock. I'm typing on my 240T and like all of the other Samsungs I've owned there is not one dead pixel.

If you get anything other than a Samsung, you are settling for distant second, at best.
