Why not a refurb? You can snag a Dell Workstation refurb with a standard 3-year on-site warranty, and chances are it'll be brand new anyway. Just a way of getting a lot more for your money. You're not going to find much bang for your buck at IBM, etc., for under a grand.

Yeah, I'd ditch the video and sound cards, SLI mobo, and get a couple of drives in RAID 1 maybe a faster cpu.

400 bucks for a Dell comp with a P4/512mb and a free LCD, comes with a WinXP Home OS, technically the OS if free, comes with keyboard and mouse

150 bucks for a solid printer with scanner features

50 for software security

300 bucks for Office 2003

total: 900 USD

he said he uses it for personal use aswell.

7600gt
so if he ever wants to pop in a game... he wont be upset.

sli mobo just for giggles he could save like 40$ getting a non sli board.

soundcards are just worth it to offload cpu equations.

he could do stuff cheaper.... but that was just my opinion for a solid setup for 1000$

if he doesnt do any gaming..id keep everything the same but get a cheap vid card..no soundcard cheaper mobo and a 200$ lcd.

keyboard + mouse = 10$ =P scythe keyboard for 5$ is awesome ive used it for 6 months now and it doesnt feel mushy or lacks response or whatever. I use it for gaming and its fine.

edit: pay for office? LOL

Is there a problem?

To OP: how long are you going to keep this? When you upgrade, will you replace [some of] your current components or are you going to buy an all-new PC and keep the old one around as a secondary PC?

Is noise a major factor? Will you overclock?

Have you ever considered getting a refurb?

But seriously, you just missed a good deal on the Dell XPS 170 (semi-loaded) for around $1300.

Dell XPS M140 ftw. Best laptop around under $1500, and you can probably configure it to almost max without breaking the $1500 mark. My dad just got one 2 weeks ago, and it's just beautiful. Get it, you won't regret it, perfect 14" screen laptop, awesome build quality.

Dell.com is your friend.

edit: Yeah, about the same thing as what Punisher said

Some of the systems at Dell Outlet are listed as "Previously Ordered New." Those are canceled orders that never shipped, not refurbs. But I still say don't limit yourself to those.

He said a laptop guys.... i just read like 5 posts of people telling him to build an SLI Desktop... Read the damn post before you jump into ******. And he doesnt need a 7600 GT. He would probably be fine with a radeon 9250 with what he wants to do with it. IF he wanted a desktop. However he doesnt so i would suggest he goes to www.viciouspc.com www.dell.com or www.ibuypower.com and pick something up that suits your needs.

Best of luck my friend
