Looking for something different. DSLRs feel a bit bland. Any ideas?

Just sold my Canon collection. I have my tripod and lights still. Initially I sold the 5DII to purchase the 5DIII but I'm not feeling another DSLR. I checked out Leica but $5k is too much for an experiment. I would like to stick to the $1200 price range.

Any ideas? An artsy camera like the Holga is fine but something less toy-like would be preferred.

Thanks!

Nex ?

RX100?

The new canon mini-dslr ?

Hmm. I wanted something different then the everyday digital camera. Something that has a feel to it. This sounds stupid. I can't think of away to describe it.

Think of it as an expensive hipster camera...

That said the RX100 looks amazing. I need to pick something up in 2 weeks.

Hmmm. The Lytro is $400

Guh, please don't. Not impressed with this camera. It's literally just a plaything for people who have too much money to buy. Being able to select your focus after the fact is neat, but everything is still just soft soft soft.

That X100 looks great from the front, sides, under belly, top... but not the back.

What's not clear: What are you aiming for size wise?
I guess some analog 645 is pretty different.
Or a stash of throw away cameras.
Does quality matter?

Of course there's the new M9 monochrome... but yeah, expensive.
Sigma DP series cameras are maybe a bit slow. But should be interesting.

Get a Hasselblad, Mamiya, 4x5 or 8x10 with digital back. Or get a Leica.

If you really want something that acts fundamentally different from other cameras, make your own pinhole cameras. By changing the structure of the backing, (from, say, a flat box to the side of a coffee can), you alter the type of photo to take.

As photography goes, it's a pretty cheap way to take some unusual photos.

I think I'm going to pick up a small point and shoot. The Sigma suggestion was good. Never thought about considering them.
So I guess the two cameras I am considering are:
DP2s DP1x= $469.00
Sony DSC RX100 = $650

I guess I need to actually try them out in person.

Or a 35mm Leica

Fuji X100 or X-Pro 1
Sony NEX-5N or NEX-7
Canon EOS M?

Any other CSC doesn't have the image quality to make you not regret buying a DSLR.

Can the Sigma RAW program output 15 megapixel non-interpolated images? Seems like a waste to take a 4800x3200 image with RGB at each pixel, and then scale it up with interpolation.

Have you shot a rangefinder before? If not, why not grab something a little cheaper than a Leica, a half dozen rolls of film, and see how you like it before spending serious cash. For that matter, why not do that anyways?

You could also try medium format - my first thought was a 645 SLR, but there's lots of options. If you go Pentax, Hassleblad, or Mamiya, you also leave a (pricey) path back to digital for yourself.

If you want something digital, the Pentax Q is, ahem, quirky and fun, and you could fit pretty much the entire system in your budget. I'd say it's a pretty solid contender for "upscale hipster".

Of course, it might be best to pick up a small and handy P&S and just pay attention and see what catches your eye over the next year or so. It looks to be a pretty good year....

I'll put one more thing out there, have you looked at the Nikon 1 system? Some here will deride the smallish sensor, but it really overperforms and many who use it really love the way it handles - especially the superquick AF (fastest in the world by some measures). Small, handy, fast...

if you really want to be hipster and have a different feel, a medium format TLR.

or, just get a medium format holga and be done with it.
