looking for:

Turion 64
14" or 15" WXGA TFT
60gb HD (min.) 5,400rpm (min.)
ATI X700 dedicated video (64 or 128mb)
DVD/CD-RW combo (DVD burner not required)
Wireless LAN g, USB 2.0 x4, Firewire, multi-card reader
around 6 or 7 lbs.

I will be doing graphic/web design, heavy internet, watching DVDs, some video editing, moderate gaming. I hope to spend no more than $1500ish.

If this is unrealistic, let me know. Should I wait a couple of months for the variety of Turions to come out? I am interested in the Acer Ferrari 4005 (too flashy/expensive), Aspire 5024 (slow RAM?, 4200rpm hd, loud fan) and Asus laptops (too much $$$$).

thanks for the suggestion. I guess I looked over this Acer model.

Is it easy to upgrade a video card on a laptop? (If down the road 64mb is not enough) Does anyone here own a TravelMate 4400? If so, what are your thoughts?

Also, is it possible to custom build an Acer laptop online?

Most laptops don't let you upgrade the video card, and I doubt that the Acer is any different.

And my understanding is that you can only buy Acer models as they're equipped on the Acer website.

The Ferrari is a little too much money I want to spend for my first laptop. $1000-1500 is my ideal range.

Acer 5250? I can't find any info on this model number. Are you thinking of the Aspire 5024? I think that one is only available in Europe right now. Does anyone know when the Turion 64 MT-xx processors will be out?

HP has turion laptop's, but they only have an ATI radeon 200m express. Not sure how that compares to the x700, but I'm assuming it's like comparing apples to oranges.

I think he was referring to the Acer 5020. Planned specs are Turion 64, 15.4" WXGA (WSXGA+ maybe?), and 128MB X700.

Unfortunately WHO knows when it will get here. Christmas maybe?

The Acer 4400 is a good compromise, but the 64MB VRAM leaves it a little lacking to me. 128MB really is ideal for suitable gaming. Make sure you've got 1GB RAM & a fast HDD if you have <128MB VRAM!

Also, the MSI-1029 is now available for purchase sporting 128MB X700 & Turion MT processors. Check out the thread on it here:

EDIT BTW, the MT processors have been available for a while. But either due to lack of manufacturer support (read: AMD's lawsuit) or low production capabilities/yields, they have been uncommon thus far. Several Fujitsu notebooks use the MT chip and so does the MSI.

thanks for pointing me to this MSI model. I customized it at Xmeld computers http://www.xmeld.com/html/msi1029.html and it's right around the $1500 mark. I need to think about this and decide soon. I'm actually moving to Japan (from US) at the end of the month. I want to get my laptop here before I go....

I'm basically debating getting the TravelMate 4400 now from zipzoomfly for about $1300, or torturing myself until Nov. or Dec. when I visit the US and see what's out then. (don't think I can live w/o my own computer for 3 months!)

Do you think the MSI-1029 will actually be shipping soon? What about the Aspire 5024 getting to the US? thanks.

The Acer 5020's may or may not show up this year is the best guess I have. I keep hearing September/November, but before that we heard this summer so who knows.

And you do realize that Japan has some of the coolest and newest sh!t out there right? Buy one there Unless of course you can't read Japanese Windows!

Yes! I realize how strange that must sound for me to buy a laptop in the US before moving to Japan. I am going to be living there for a year, don't speak or read the language yet, and can imagine myself having a hard time communicating with a salesperson about technical details in a store.

I've been to some Japanese websites selling computers, and often times the technical specs are written in Japanese characters, not romanji or english. It's killing me because I will need a laptop the day I arrive and I'm also looking into an extended US warrany if I buy in the US.

With my luck, I'll get off the plane in Tokyo with my Turion 64 ML-30 and see tons of laptops advertising the MT-34.

iam too tired to add any comments on these books, check if u can find them anywhere. And buying one in japan mite no be bad idea, u could still install ur own english win xp version or if u find a good shop they will do that for u. Besides Japanese ppl do speak english very well, and talking about technical details and numbers should be an easy conversation.
