I've been thinking about getting a tablet for my kids. The wife and I will use it also I'm sure. The big thing I've been looking for is a tough case.

My contenders are the:

  • nexus 7
  • Kindle Fire (which one)
  • B&N nook tablet

I'm thinking the best bang for the buck is the Nook HD+ (the 9inch one)
I'm an android nerd and would prefer the Nexus7, but the Nook has the playstore
But my kids are rough and I want a good case like an otterbox but so far I haven't found anything like that for either the Nook ones or the Nexus7

if walmart is nearby, try the hisense 7pro. for $130, it works great! check out the reviews online. i have 1. although it is a little bit thicker than the nexus, it is just as good.

without a doubt, the nook HD+ is the best bang for the buck but i have not play with it.

You could get the smaller Nook HD refurb for $70 a couple of days ago on Ebay and probably again soon.

I think the Nook HD+ is $100 somewhere right now.

We have them both and I think they're very nice. I also have the 2013 Nexus 7 which is very nice but a lot more, and our family has a couple of ipad 4th gen. Also very nice.

Kids also like ipod Touch 4th gens.

Hard to go wrong with the Nook HD+. As I hear they can currently be found for as little as $99, it's unmatched bang-for-buck, and certainly would be great for kids.

I personally find B&N's stock interface is a bit too 'childlike' since it's probably designed with all ages in mind. But for kids, that's actually a big positive.

There aren't an overabundance of protective cases for the HD+, but there's enough of a choice of options on Amazon and ebay.

got the nook HD+
so far...screen great!, nice having the play store but I'd rather not have to pick one google account or the other so my wife and I can have things separate. I'll probably setup my wife as the google account it's linked to.
I like how they setup things for kids, but haven't explored it much.

the screen does seem a bit laggy and slow to respond to touches compared to my nexus4.
overall for $140 this is a good deal

I thought the nook requires a non-standard charging cable?
That would make it a no for me.

A Nexus7 is a safe bet.

I just bought one. Was wanting a tablet or a Chromebook. Figured I would either install Cyanogenmod on the tablet or install Windows on the Chromebook. Just wanted basic hardware good enough for entertainment purposes. Would rather have had something x86 to run Windows, but free reign over Android will work...i.e. no B&N software. This thing was awful on first startup, TBQH. Once stuff updated and I had a slightly more 'complete' Android, it was a lot better...but if I had to use stock software, I would certainly pick up something else...which, for $149 (or whatever sale prices you can find below that), is going to be inferior hardware to the HD+. I'm sure you could get a competitive processor, but nothing hugely faster, and I didn't see any <$150 tablets with 1920x1280 screens. So doing a little software tweaking seemed worth the hassle to me.

The charging connector thing might bug me more if everything else wasn't getting more standardized, or the battery was smaller. If I can leave the cable at home, I don't really care what kind of wonky connector they use. So long as replacements are available at minimal cost, of course.

Gamestop is having a promo on pre-owned hardware, including tablets.

If you buy 2, you get 1 free.

I got 3 LTE Retina iPads for $200 each. Minis were going for $140 each. Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 were $60 each. When you buy 3, of course. Do you need 3?

We just bought the grandson a Kindle Fire HD.
Mainly because we are familiar with it and we can put books/apps/etc on it for him from the Amazon store. He's 2000 miles away.

Nexus7 is a perfect variant. The feedbacks are good.It has good processor and display, colors.I had an experience working with it.What I can notice is that I was not tired of looking at it in comparison with simple laptop.
