I had a profile on there for ~5 years before I realized I would probably never get any dates out of it. Sending hundreds of different messages into empty space with no response wasn't fun. I even paid for like a year-long premium subscription at some point, thinking it would help. Ugh. The Match.com merger didn't do it any favors either. I'm a happier person for having finally deleted my profile.

I had some success on OKC when I used it briefly. As with any online site, how your profile is written and how you initially message people affects responses a lot. From what I've heard on a girl perspective, it's even worse than something like Tinder as anybody can send you a message.

OkCupid is a lot like applying for a corporate job. You get asked a lot of inane questions in the screening interview. When you do send your application off, nobody will ever get back to you.

This is what I've convinced myself too. Meeting people face-to-face in a real world, organic environment is always going to be more effective than trying to meet people on the internet. Ideally, modern technology should make it much easier to find a good partner, but realistically, online dating is a shithole.

I understand the importance of having a good profile. I've lurked online discussions and read probably a dozen different articles about how to create a good OkCupid profile. I've re-written and "optimized" my bio so many times that it got to a point where it only felt like work anymore. It felt less like meeting people and more like being a copywriter doing SEO for a corporate marketing firm.

So accurate it's scary. I especially realize this now, given that I just happened to have spent the last month talking to a new potential employer. The only difference there is that I actually got the job.
