We currently have our website hosted with an outside hosting company running a windows platform. The person who made the website did it in ASP. I'm familiar with PHP, hence, will be converting the entire site over to PHP. we have linux installed on two of our servers. So, if I bring our main website in we would also need a DNS server. No way do I want to administer BIND.

So, I have two options.

1 - Find another host that offers unix
2 - run our DNS through an external company (www.everydns.net)

Its not very clear what you are asking.

Why not just keep everything as is and host a website with your own windows server?

Geeks like the Word Linux, but it is not necessarily always the best choice.

With all due respect you should discus these issues with your work place, considering over all con and pro, and make a comprehensive higher level decision. The nature of the business the expectation for the future, what other business, are Data Bases involved etc.

One day you might continue to higher level job, the next person that will come might know PHP or something else or whatever.

Than what the whole Web Site will be changed again.

site needs to be changed because no one knows ASP. I know PHP and I have a hosting company, but that would be conflict of interest.

They pay me money to make the decisions so I'm not going to run to the CFO to discuss what needs to be done. She'll say thats why shes paying me to make these decisions.

Data center hosting can be gotten on the cheap, so much so that hosting DNS or web sites on site is almost definitely not the right choice. Converting from ASP to PHP is a good idea though.

Let your ISP handle your DNS. That's one of the service that is generally provide with a circuit. They usually do a fair job, but depending on their setup, management can occasionally be a bit of a hassle.

lilcam, there are plenty of DC providers out there with hosting (DNS, web, http) on the $50/month scale. And they will be a lot faster and more reliable than the connectivity you have on site.

for $50/month we mind as well find a unix hosting company. i would use mine, but it would be a conflict of interest. :frown:

Like I said pm rossman and ask for a good host with both. It would have to be windows till you convert from ASP.

it's cool, i can find both. i know who they are. Worse case scenario I'll have the school run it through my company. I'm sure the boss wont mind. saving them money anyways.

Thanks for the recommendations, I do truely appreciate it.

I have discussed web hosting extensively with lilcam, he knows how to contact me if he needs my assistance.

This is true. Depending on how large your site is, companies like Speakeasy can do hosting for as little as $40 a month.
