Looking to Buy a Monitor

I've been thinking (for a long time) about getting a 22" CRT (this Mitsubishi/NEC model to be exact). But NewEgg no longer carries it, and the price at various stores is actually going up!!!

Am I just better off buying a comparably sized LCD? I've been a staunch opponent of LCD monitors for some time, due to various "issues" I have with them (dead pixels, no dynamic resolution, poorer color gamut, etc.), but I guess I'll have to bite the bullet sometime.

I will be using the monitor for gaming (action gaming mostly), and it is a must that I am able to run 1600x1200 on my desktop. Price is no concern (although I'm not going to buy something that's thousands of dollars, just for practical purposes).

What do folks recommend (CRT or LCD)? My 19" ViewSonic just isn't cutting it any more (I can't run 1600x1200!).

I'd take a look at the Dell 20in LCDs, the 2001FP and the 2005FPW. The 2001 runs at 16x12 native. The 2005 is a widescreen panel running at 1680x1050. Both are very popular panels. Both retail for around 750 off Dell's website, however, Dell often runs sales where you can get them for much less. The Hot Deals forums usually has the 411 on those deals. I got my 2005FPW for 410 shipped, and I'd only trade it for two 2005s (or two 2405s.)

High end CRT's are disappearing . Check for a grade A refurb if u want to save a few hundred bucks:

A 21-22" CRT weighs about 70 pounds and takes up a 20 inch cube on your desk, take that into consideration. Theres some nice LCD's like Bateluer listed. I don't recommend a widescreen one because alot of games dont show up properly with a widescreen monitor. Otherwise, the FE2111SB is a kickass monitor.

The more I look, the harder it is for me to find the FE2111SB. Amazon has it (through the Office Depot), but the price is nearly $100 more than what it used to be!

Yeah, it's typical that when one technology is phased out, it's components start going up in price as they are harder to find while the quality control goes down. Happened with PCI card when AGP became established. The good thing is usually the new tech is price about the same or lower and performs better or at least the same. This CRT to LCD transition however, is the first time in the industry where we are actually going from a superior to inferior performance peripheral. Soon enough LCDs will become closer to CRT picture wise in games, and SED might pan out if the lifespan is better then >10000 hours, but till then, I'd hold off on both high end LCD or CRT purchases now or I'd get a used CRT, cheaper and a better chance of better quality.

I'm surprised your 19' CRT dosent run 1600X1200, it must be pretty old or a very low end model. The samsung NFs are nice and a 19' can be found used for >$120.

Hyundai L90D+ $330.00 with an 8ms refresh rate. Great color too.

CRT's are still great. Cant go wrong with a CRT.
Anything with a SONY Trinitron tube or Mitsubishi Tube.

I tried moving from a CRT to an LCD recently. I play FPS games, with a few RPGs thrown in for good measure. In addition to having a single dead pixel (which drove me crazy), I couldn't get used to the motion blur on an LCD, despite the panel having a 16ms response time (the panel was a Dell UltraSharp 2001FP). I ended up sending the panel back for a refund. Your experience may differ, depending on how sensitive you are to blurring effects. Personally, I'm sticking with my CRT for the foreseeable future.
