I use my comp almost 100% for gaming and have been considering an LCD instead of a CRT, which i have always used. However, i have heard that LCD's have some problems with certain games because of refresh rates, etc. I am looking to spend no more than about $500. Any suggestions of either LCD or CRT for around that price, bearing in mind it is mainly for gaming? Thanks.

any LCD with respone time of 16ms and contrast ratio of 450:1 or 500:1 will work fine for gaming .... U might get some ghosting in DVD play back .... viewsonic, dell and samsungs are good choices IMHO

I don't know what Graphics card you are using but with that kind of budget and if you are not limited with Footprint Space, then I would go with a quality CRT (17"'s can be had for under $300) and look @ getting a top notch Vid Card.

Seems the Viewsonic VP171b seems like a good bet. Is the Dell 2001FP worth the extra $400? Is the only difference between them that the 2001FP is 20" instead of 17"?

I was in the same position about a year ago, and I decided I'd rather have a large CRT then a smaller LCD. In the future I can deff see myself going LCD, but for now I would still prefer to have a larger CRT, for cheaper. So I went with a Sony 19" G410 for around $300 shipped and I am more then pleased with it.

LOL...The late info suggests they don't get much better then that but if you have the space go with a massive 21" CRT IMO and if you want the LCD then there's a couple with quick response but I still think a top notch 21"CRT Flat screen would be better both visually and response wise for less $'s

The vp171 looks tiny in comparison to the 2001FP so that is a BIG difference. Also you may want to investigate more because the vp171b (and all AU panels) sacrifice color reproduction for response time. I can't tell you for sure that the 2001FP doesn't do the same but I would look into it. I can tell you the 2001FP is one huge and beutiful panel. I had one sitting beside my 191ts for a few days and its awesome. Kinda want to get one but then I would have to buy another one. As to the extra $400 you could have had one for $750 shipped acouple of days ago. Keep an eye out for Dell hot deals.

Actually, the $790 deal is still good for the 2001FP. Just ordered it.

I wanted to use it but was already using a $200 coupon and was told you couldn't use both. At least not on the website.
