So far im looking at the dell 1800FP for $540, or the Planar px171m for $510. What do you recommend?

Thanks,

**
Well i got the monitor, for $384 or something crazy like that. I must say that i am impressed. I had a sony d410r 19" crt before this, and that was the best crt i had ever seen next to a 22" mistu. The 1800 is crsip and has nice colors and blacks, and looks as good if not better than the crt even at 60hz. The ghosting isnt as bad as i expected, and really isnt a problem at all. I played some ut2003 and battlefield, i mean its not exaclty a crt at 100hz. but it does its job. I am very pleased!

By the prices of the other options that you listed, it looks like you are going for more than a 15". But I have the Samsung 151v and love it. The colors are great, good brightness, and almost no ghosting. I think that the Samsung 171v is 17" if you want a bigger version. I'd give mine a 10/10.

I've had an NEC Multisync 1550M since April, and love it. Incredible brightness, and though I do a limited amount of gaming, response time also very good. This has also got 4 USB ports in the base, although 1.0, the new one is 2.0, and also 2 small speakers which are OK in a pinch. Mine is only analog, however, but don't notice any problems with picture quality at all.
I'd check out the NEC website, lots of new models, and the slim frame really makes a difference. They have a lot of models with the slim frame. Nearly all of the new models support digital as well. At the time the specs on the 1550M were about tops in the industry for brightness, contrast and response time. There's a lot out there, but I would research all the manufacturers. I had a lot of help at Amazon.com reading some of the reviews by consumers as well. Good luck!
Cheers,
Hagen

Agreed. DVI is the only way to go. I noticed a difference using my viewsonice vx900 and dell 1900 ultrasharp when I used my old video card with dvi and analog outputs. once i upgraded to dual DVI the subtle smearing went away.

i'm not a hardcore gamer. the only games i've played on this LCD are WC3 and UT2003. both looked great. check the hot deals archive for the 1800FP deal that went on about 3-4 months ago. there was a link within the thread, to a great discussion on this LCD.

If you're looking for a gaming LCD, get the Hitachi CML174 or the Hitachi CML174B (the only difference is the bezel color). I can't believe I'm the first one to recommend this. It sells for $575 at Monitors Direct with free shipping (see above links).

Great color, and the best response times on an LCD currently.

Unless you simply have to have > 17", I second Ilmater's recommendation, especially at the link he listed. I have this monitor and know for a fact that it has great color and image quality for gaming and other applications.

Don't be duped by low prices on some of these units- check that refresh rate and supported resolutions and you'll see why you can get one so cheap. HOWEVER, there is an exception to the rule, and that is Samsung. Awesome LCD monitors, great prices, great picture, great resolutions and refresh rates too. Others I would consider are NEC/Mitsubishi, Viewsonic and one of Dell's if you can find one that is actually 'up to snuff'. Best of luck.

The best gaming TFT bar none.
Vibrant colours, bright display. The perfect gaming TFT IMO.
