Planescape: Torment.

BG1 and BG2 were great. Fallout1 and Fallout2 were interesting.

But for true story, you can't beat PST.

Knights of the Old Republic if you've got an xbox or pc capable of running it (shouldn't be hard, and the game has been out long enough that it should be pretty cheap)

Xenosaga

FF VII, IX, and X. I'd avoid VIII, X2, and XI (and probably XII whenever it comes out)

and... WoW >>>>>>> Guildwars

Why not the PC version? That's the only version I played, and I think it's the second best game of all time. I heard the MIDI music was a little off on the PC version, but that's the only issue I know of.

It has serious issues with XP compatibility, the music as you mentioned and the cut-scenes are nowhere near as gorgeous as on the PS. Personally, I run the PS version with the emulators. After configuring the plugins, it's the same as on the PS but with better resolutions.
There is an XP patch, although I have not tried it yet.

hmm. i'm a big fan of the old schoolies... ie. FF and Dragon Warrior on the NES and Phantasy Star on the SMS. those are solid starts.

i just started KOTOR II myself. I loved part one, and this one seems ok so far.

i never finished Neverwinter Nights, although I do have it... same with Dungeon Seige. never finished.

ohh i agre the old rpg's are great. FF, DragonWarrior were great. I been playing Chrono trigger on the PS2.

Neverwinter Nights is also great! It has a LOT of user made packs that really make the game fresh.

ohh now i want to replay some of these games.

What emulator do you use? I have been craving to play FFVII again lately but no PS2 anymore since I got rid of it. Any links to help in getting up and running?

ePSXe is the best PSX emu hands down, and 'most' games look even better on it than on real hardware.

I shudder at all of you FFVII fanboys though. It wasn't that great of a game, the story had too many plot holes, character development was no where near as good as it could have been. It's not a bad game, but it's definitely not one of the best.

My offers for RPGs really depend on if you want good graphics or not, and how much time you are willing to devote to a single game. There are a large number of great games for older systems, and although the graphics aren't perfect, they focus on gameplay. The Star Ocean and Shin Megami Tensei games have great stories, awesome music and deep gameplay, but the graphics are greatly outdated. Chrono Trigger is another great SNES RPG. Good PC based RPGs are mostly based off DnD, like Planetscape, Baldurs Gate and Neverwinter Nights. PSX games started to focus more on FMV story development, but Chrono Cross, Xenogears, FF7/8, Tales of Destiny are a few of the deeper games.

My advice is to start with older games first, if you can get around the highly outdated graphics. No 3d models, limited resolution sprites, minimal frames of animation. But from days when games were made to be fun, instead of to just look good.

I all depends on what kind of game you want to start off with. The RPG genre is split into a number of sub-genres. Action, DnD, Strategy, and various different styles within each.

The DnD based games are incredibly deep, and usually offer a very open ended style of gameplay. It's usually non-linear except for the few key story quests that you eventually have to do to advance the game. Because of this, these games are mostly on PC, and offer players a chance to develop huge mods to change the entire game.

Most console based RPGs are much more linear, because of the limitations of the hardware, but this usually just means that the character development and overall story are deeper because it will only unfold in a predetermined manner.

SRPGs usually don't have as deep of a story as a standard RPG, but offer unparalleled play hours and customization. Fire Emblem, Shining Force, Final Fantasy Tactics, Front Mission, Tactics Ogre are all great SRPG series.

At the end of this, I'd say start with a good SNES RPG, either Star Ocean, Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy 6 or Chrono Trigger and go from there. Fire Emblem and Front Mission are also on the SNES, so you can try some moderate depth SRPGs, but nothing that will suck up 400 hours of you life getting that last elusive piece of equipment to turn your main character into a god of battle. Most of the SNES RPGs usually take from 30 to 100 hours to beat, depending on what you try to do in them, but others can easily consume a nice piece of your life(I've logged over 1500 hours into Star Ocean 2) if you try to get everything available. But just find an RPG, try it for a few hours, if you don't like it, try something else. It may take a while before you find the particular sub-genre that you enjoy.

OMG, this probably makes little sense, but I've been typing it over the last 4 hours while dealing with ComCast customers, so gimme a little slack.

You can find any of the following RPGs on the cheap:

The Baldur's Gate series
Fallout 1 & 2
Planescape:Torment

While these games are somewhat dated graphics wise, you will be hard pressed to find deeper, more compelling old school RPGs. I never really got into the Final Fantasy series...a bit too cartoony and console-ish for my tastes.

If you like your RPGs a bit more action oriented, the Diablo or Dungeon Siege series are both a good start.

Stay away from the MMOs...big waste of time IMO.

Of the latest string of RPGs to hit the market, Knights of the Old Republic was pretty good...basically Neverwinter Nights with a Star Wars theme and cool lightsaber dueling effects. Morrowind offers an incredibly large game world, but a very slow pace.

Eagerly awaiting Oblivion.

Innovated Battle System (Materia (FFVII), Junctioning (FFVIII))
In-Depth Story that gets you thinking
Deep Charecters
Well known history and been around since the NES days

He's right, I'd say start with FFVII.. get it for PC or for PSX and play it through.. then do whatever newage game you like.

I don't know if I should call you lucky or deprived. CT was the 129th RPG I beat, and I lost track a few years ago when I hit 500. How many weeks of my life have been wasted playing third rate RPGs, just because I couldn't leave them unbeaten.

Yes, advice. Stay away from SaGa Frontier 1 and Beyond the Beyond...as well as Ephemeral Fantasia, if you value having any interest in RPGs in the future. All are horrible, horrible games that never should have seen the light of day. Beyond the Beyonds only saving grace was Motoi Sakuraba composing the soundtrack for it, the other 2 have nothing to make them worthwhile, although SaGa was good for about 20 minutes.

I think the resolution is the same - 640*480 - but there are hardly any polygons so you can run 8x antialiasing no problems.

Best. RPG. Ever.

Exactly how many RPGs have you played? FFVII is far from the best, it's above average, but nothing better. The story was weak and filled with plot holes, the character development was less than stellar, the battle mechanics were kinda unique, but nothing spectacular. A majority of people seem to call FFVII the best because it was the first they played, but mainly because it was the first RPG to have massive advertising to back it in North America. Final Fantasy 6 was a better game in terms of battle mechanics and story. Of course, this is my opinion.
