Looking to get toned

I am currently 6' tall, and weigh appx. 175 pounds, and am 17 years old. I do not eat that great. I rarely eat fast food, but I eat out a lot with my friends, but will rarely eat poorly at home. My typical meal consists of some from of chicken dish with a vegetable, but can consist of a chicken burrito, some form of frozen pizza, frozen indian food (god that stuff is good), or random frozen stuff from Trader Joes.

I am trying to get a more toned look to my body. I do not necessarily want bulging muscles, just a nice muscle look in shirts (or without of course). I currently do not do any gym exercise, but go on walks everyday to and from work (about a 10 min. walk each way). I am looking to get a gym membership at 24 hour fitness shortly.

If I get a gym membership, what do you suggest I work on/what machine? Any suggestions?

Any good recipies for things I should eat?

Any good supplements to put in a shake or something? Is muscle milk any good?

I do not want any supplements that could be harmful, so keep those out of the picture please, and nothing over the top.

..a magnetic resistance rowing machine will provide a complete overall workout without adding the bulk of lifting. Nothing like the solid toned appearance of a hard core "sculler".

Rather than type out yet another long-winded post explaining diet, lifting, cutting, and maintenance calories, I'll just refer you to the website in my sig. It has knowledgable and helpful members who will always help new members who are open to advice.


Or heck, do a search on here for one of the hundreds of other times that this question has been asked and I have answered it. Seriously, we get a few of these threads every week.

Maybe myself, Amused, SVT Cobra, krunchyknome, purbeast0, shortspanishguy, and anyone else I am forgetting should get together and make the "ultimate AT bodybuilding sticky" or something.

another vote for rowing. I combine that with a few other exercises (crunches/push ups/a few free weights) and i'm pretty happy with the results i'm 21/5'11/155 btw

Workout using moderate to light weight and high reps, do cardio (30-40 minutes of a high intensity) at least every other day and eat correctly. If you are 6' and 175lbs, you are probably pretty thin IMO. I'm 6' 2' and 220 (a little chubby, but not huge) now. When I played college baseball I used to lift and run alot and was ripped at 205 (well, except for the stomach).

tennis ball machine... stand in front of one, guaranteed to lay waste to whichever part of your anatomy it hits. Rest up and repeat...
