Looking to replace a 300g V-Raptor

I am looking to replace my whirring 300g VelociRaptor. The drive is actually solid in HD Tune reports:



and the only thing about it to me is the whirring (not the heads)

I've been debating whether to pick up the single platter Samsung F3 HD502HJ 500g drive. I think the performance between these two drives is very similar... With my 1Tb F3 I compared the noise levels and the F3 is next to silent. I think the only thing i would be losing is the access time. 7.1ms (reported in HD Tune) WD, compared to 8.9ms (marketing numbers for the F3)

My trouble is, I have 3 machines and I can't figure out how many to buy and how to set them up, e.g. RAID0 vs single etc.

So the reason you are replacing them is... "the whirring?" As in the noise of them spinning? You can try soft mounting them to see if it mutes the noise. If you don't need the capacity, either go with the 500GB F3 (and maybe short stroke them) or go with one of those small and fast SSDs like the Intel 40GB or OCZ 30GB. The OCZ has been on sale (with rebate) for around $70-80 lately, and they have a 60GB version (Agility) that was on sale/rebate for $130 recently and then on Shellshocker for $125. The 40GB Intel is around $120 regular priced on Amazon. Any of these would outperform the VelociRaptor while making zero noise.

Those F3s at 62$ a piece on eBay are looking really temping... must ... think... before i make... decision... argh

So, I think I found a reason to use my FALS WD 1tb .. My next step is seeing if I can use MirrorFolder to make a full bootable copy of this Windows install (vraptor) to the FALS

I couldn't stand the high pitch sound although I put it in the bottom chamber of the Antec P182.

I replaced my Raptor X 150G with Intel SSD 80G G1. It was so much faster and no noise at all.
