Depends on what the item is, how much you're asking for it, and how much it's worth. I had a car I needed to sell ASAP about 2 years ago. I was asking well under KBB because I wanted it gone in a day or 2. A guy wanted it, I told him 2 others were coming that day, he said he couldn't come until the next morning. So he offered $200 more if I held it for him until the next morning. I didn't hold it for him, but the other 2 ended up not wanting it. So I ended up getting $200 more. It's not unheard of for people to offer you more $$$ in hopes you'll hold an item for them.
That's only true where there are multiple offers. Unsolicited offers above the asking price are always a scam. Always. There are no exceptions to this.
