Asking price is $1700 and this is the response I got back after him asking if it was still FS.

Thanks for your quick response, i was introduced to this site by a friend at work. I am well satisfied with the description on your ad, I will like to purchase your item for my Friend who resides and study abroad as a complimentary gift. Though i will not be able to make cash payment due to my tight schedule. But am ready to make paypal as my method of paying, I am offering you $1900 including the shipping fees because i want you help me by shipping it out directly by you through the USPS Express mail Service 5-8days.. Send your PayPal email address to me so I can pay you and proceed with the transaction,I am using only PayPal. This is because PayPal is the most secured and safest way to transact online. You can also get a PayPal email address within few minutes at www.PayPal.com if you are new to PayPal. I hope to read from you soon.

Thanks.

My gf thinks it's legit

How does that scam work?
I would assume that you could just close your paypal account after the money is in your account.

Then again I don't use ebay or paypal.

Well this is obviously not legit but I have gotten emails where they said they would pay me then pick it up.... That's rather bold I would think. After I cash the check and get fined like $50 they will attempt to pick up (steal) my listed item?

Jeez, just googling (the rather oddly and generically phrased) "I am well satisfied with the description on your ad" turns up umpteen references to suspected scams. One, I note, is from several years ago.

Do these guys just use the exact same script over-and-over again for years? Not only scammers, but _lazy_ scammers!

Presumably its because English isn't their first language? Surprised they haven't amended the dreadful grammar used in the script at some point during the years they've been using it.

Yup. I guarantee someone somewhere is sitting in a cafe with notepad open copying and pasting. They probably can't speak english, just enough to see the dollar amount.

Got a similar email earlier from a laptop I posted up, they offered 100 bucks over my asking price with shipping to a colleague. I asked for Full name, shipping address, two phone numbers. Even if they had answered I still would probably not have done it. too risky.

they probably use a stolen credit card. it takes a few days for paypal to send money to the bank during which time the scam will be found or they will do the paypal ACH transfer which takes like 5 days by itself which is also a scam

but you have already mailed off your camera

Here's the real question though. How effective would an American born, native English speaking, scammer from nigeria be? Imagine if it was someone who was naturally good at social engineering and really excelled at this. Holy Uber-Scammer Batman.

And it's just a shortcut! /oblivious

I still wonder why MS went from making showing filename extensions by default in Win95A to hiding them by default in the IE4.0 desktop update/Win95C (not sure about Win95B). Combined with the fact that shortcuts have extensions that are always hidden (*.lnk) and the fact that Explorer always shows embedded icons in executable EXE and ICO files, it's ASKING for it to be abused.

If that really is supposed to be a shortcut, then the system is likely already compromised by whatever created the shortcut.

offering $1900 for a $1700 is never, ever legit...the easiest red flag there is.

Depends on what the item is, how much you're asking for it, and how much it's worth. I had a car I needed to sell ASAP about 2 years ago. I was asking well under KBB because I wanted it gone in a day or 2. A guy wanted it, I told him 2 others were coming that day, he said he couldn't come until the next morning. So he offered $200 more if I held it for him until the next morning. I didn't hold it for him, but the other 2 ended up not wanting it. So I ended up getting $200 more. It's not unheard of for people to offer you more $$$ in hopes you'll hold an item for them.

If the offer isn't for 5% or more off your number, it probably isn't legit.

I don't know why, but the times I've sold items in online classifieds I've put a price higher than what I thought what I'd get and therefore put "OBO" to counteract low ball offers. As it turns out, I've gotten full price for everything I've sold. But then again, I wait until I talk to someone which I can actually see is serious about buying. Even then, it only took me three days to sell my ASUS G60VX for $550 so I could buy my sig laptop.
