Looks like Apple's map software has lots of issues

Among the user complaints regarding Apple's maps sent to the BBC were:
Users have complained about the quality of satellite images in the new software (bottom)

  • Some towns appear to be missing, such as Stratford-upon-Avon and Solihull.
  • Others, like Uckfield in East Sussex, are in the wrong location.
  • Satellite images of various locations, particularly in Scotland, are obscured by cloud.
  • A search for Manchester United Football Club directs users to Sale United Football Club, a community team for ages five and above.
  • Users also reported missing local places, such as schools, or strange locations. Another screenshot showed a furniture museum that was apparently located in a river.

I'm shocked, shocked I tell you that a company with little experience in mapping has a significantly inferior product compared to a company that completely changed how we think about online maps that has been doing it for a decade. Remember how shitty Mapquest and Microsoft's mapping efforts were before Google Maps arrived?

Anybody could have seen this coming which is why I'm shocked Apple would release such a poor experience considering their history of waiting until something works well prior to releasing it.

Story from Ireland.

Irishtimes

I guess it's something for Apple fans to look forward too in the iPhone6- maps that were as good as something that they already had on the iphone4....

They need to crowdsource the data so they needed to put it out so people can start editing it.

The thing about maps is, you can either buy the best data set or you can spend years to build it yourself.

Google spent years to build it, and now they have the best mapping data set available.

Apple has the money to buy it, but they went with second-tier mapping options like TomTom and Open Street Map, and these are the results.

Nokia went out and bought it when they acquired Navteq, probably the only mapping company that can give Google a run for its money.

My developer friends said the early iOS 6 builds they got had absolutely horrid mapping. So now it's progressed to merely bad?

I still don't known why they felt the need to make their own maps
Data mining is big business. In fact, that's almost Google's entire's business. Apple wants a piece of the pie, and is pissed at Google for Android too, and this is retribution.

Yes, Apple is pissed at Google for Android... but they're gonna have to get over it. Neither the courts nor their devices will remove Android from the list of contenders, and their dream of an Apple & Microsoft dominated world will fail.

The Tokyo Narita airport is not even there? Wow.

Here's one with place names written in Chinese, Korean, and Japanese. Apparently there is a lot of Korean written on the maps.

Heh. Maybe China and Korea are sabotaging the Japanese database for political reasons. Or maybe Samsung and the Chinese Android makers are sabotaging the database.

Seriously though, this is truly horrid. So I guess the horrid --> just bad improvement only applies for certain areas.

I thought TomTom gave the map data. (and people wonder why I chose Garmin over TomTom)

Having map data is one thing. Making a good map from it is another.

Let's just hope it doesn't take 3 years to make it right like what often happens when Apple does stuff like this. (eg. On a much smaller scale, Apple made the very usable iMovie '06 into a totally unusable piece of crap called iMovie '08, and it took three years before it became decent again.)

Aside from the usage portion, who is to blame when things like airports aren't even on the map?

I wonder if there will be a way (I'm sure some motivated "hackers" will figure it out) to put back the old iOS 5 stock maps app onto an iOS 6 iPhone

Glad I held off updating my wife's 4S.

Anyone try the single-handed zoom on the Google Maps update (not sure if they updated it for iOS or not)? Pretty smooth, especially makes sense for phone use.

Nokia's maps are really damn good. I would not hesitate to use it in place of google maps.

Apple is to blame. TomTom had Stratford-upon-Avon in their GPS software.

I'm pretty sure Tom Tom knows where Japan's biggest airport is located.

Either way, Apple deserves the blame for putting out a beta product here.
