Looks like gas stations are resistant to hitting the $4 point

Gas prices went up to about $3.99 about a month ago. The cheaper gas stations were around $3.89 at the time. Gas has not hit $4 and you can tell gas is going up because the cheaper gas stations are around $3.95 now. I actually feel sorry for them because I know they make very little on gas and holding out at $3.99 is probably close to cost for many of them.

Now it's about as expensive as milk. Not surprising, really. I'm surprised it hasn't happened sooner considering all of the processing it has to go through.

And just a couple years ago one grocery store or another would always have milk on sale for $1.99 per gallon... best sale price I've seen recently is $2.46, with ~3.70 being the norm.

Everything is reliant on oil right now, more or less, including the distribution and processing of milk, so expect all food to go up soon as well.

We hit that about a month ago in Chicago. It's usually a $0.20 gap between regular and premium, but when premium hit $3.99 it stuck there. At one point you could get premium for the same price as regular, $3.99. As soon as regular hit $4 it went back to the $0.20 gap.

just think of it as helping exxon-mobil reach their goal of posting their highest profits ever (only got second-best last quarter!)

Yep. Dog food went up from $28 to $33 in the course of a month.

ditto. if they buy their gas from another company, they pay higher pricing than that gas companies corp stores. their prices will naturally be higher. the fact that gas in your area is 3.99 and in my area its just topping out at 3.53 tells me that something is amiss across the board, since i doubt they are buying from better sources to get "cheaper" gas here. those stores generally make their bank off the convenience store sales and little off the gas sales itself i think, making that 4 dollar jump just a bargaining tool to get people to stop. if it goes over, you can almost guarantee that people will drive on by until most are over 4 bucks.

lots of older stations can only go up to 3.99 without being revamped. they will soon sell in half gallons and just double the price when you check out

so, when the price of oil goes down will the price of food go back down?

I have my doubts.

Actually, here in NH, many of the older stations have old mechanical dials which only go up to 3.99, they can't even display $4! rofl

The gas station business is struggling right now. They have no control over the situation; it's not their fault.
