the fact that gas in your area is 3.99 and in my area its just topping out at 3.53 tells me that something is amiss across the board
gas prices vary based on area and state
yup. that variance is what i was talking about. gas costs the same to refine, no matter where it is delivered. most states get their gas from the same pipeline. the only difference is the mix at the farms where they put in their cleaners and additives. most pricing is based on local economy and cost of living, thats where a lot of the variance comes in.

i don't share the same sympathy
ditto. if they buy their gas from another company, they pay higher pricing than that gas companies corp stores. their prices will naturally be higher. the fact that gas in your area is 3.99 and in my area its just topping out at 3.53 tells me that something is amiss across the board, since i doubt they are buying from better sources to get "cheaper" gas here. those stores generally make their bank off the convenience store sales and little off the gas sales itself i think, making that 4 dollar jump just a bargaining tool to get people to stop. if it goes over, you can almost guarantee that people will drive on by until most are over 4 bucks.
AFAIK in Canada Gas stations make 1-2 cents a liter.
as far as i know, most gas stations arent making more than a couple cents per gallon here either. i used to get to see the gas invoicing for a major convenience store here in az. my best friend used to be pretty high up in the gas dispatch, and now manages a store.
