Looks like no M3 for me...

I've been debating whether to get a 97 M3 (E36) or a E39 5 series (current gen).
I've always wanted an M3, and now I can afford one, but it doesn't seem all that practical.
What's holding me back is insurance, luxury/comfort, and space.
You can't really move people in it unless you get the 4door, which I don't think looks good. The luxury is better than a lot of the Japanese cars in the same price range, but I'm used to my 7 series... the M3 interior feels a little plasticy and cheap.
The insurance on the M3 is pretty reasonable in my opinion... I'm 21 w/2 tickets and no accidents. The M3 is ~2100/yr for full coverage w/500 deductible.
However, that's $700/yr more than the rate for a 528i. That $700 equates to about $50 more a month I could put towards savings or putting it into the car. With the M3, that would be $50 a month I could never get back. Until I'm 25, thats almost $3000.
The 5 isn't as fast as the M3, nor does it handle as well... but I don't really drive all that fast/hard anymore. Those two fat tickets taught me
The 528i has the comfort/luxury I like, the space that I like, and still retains good power and handling. With some minor aftermarket upgrades, I'm sure I'd be really happy with it.
It'll never match a M3, but most of my driving is either being stuck in city traffic or long trips on the freeway. For both of these, a 528i would be a better car.
In the end, I think it comes down to the M3 being something I wanted to achieve and the 5 being something I can realistically live with.
*sigh* It's hard to say no to the M3 after all these years, but I know I'm making the right choice... If only I could afford both

So, I'm now looking for a 528i w/steptronic in a good color with reasonable miles.
A 540i would be nice, but I *really* like BMW's straight 6's.

I hope you're prepared to pay the costly maintenance on a used BMW, especially if it's nearing the end of its warranty.

Why not check out an Acura TL-S or Nissan Maxima SE if you want a nice sedan?

rich parents??
It's a 6 year old M3, which would cost about $20K. I could have easily bought a $20K car when I was 21.

Wow, I'm quite poor. I am 21, and I cannot buy a $5000 car...

I'm almost 21, and I couldn't buy a $10 car...

I don't think it's that unusual... when I was 21, I moved out, got a "real job", and I had a little bit of savings from working summers while in college (I did graduate early).

In fact, I bought my current car when I was 21, although it only costed $16K and the insurance on my econobox is nowhere near what an M3's would be.

I have a current gen 528i and a SLK. SLK gets the looks, but the 528i is so comfortable and practical.

Thats a guy who's gonna go farther in life then some. Most guys your age would be all up in a M3 like a gerbel. You've actually rationalized why you shouldnt.
I'm fairly impressed. Good job!
If it was me? M3. You only live once, and your only young for a short period of that time. Live it hard. Drive it like ya stole it. Dont forget to pull out.

Sure, they SAY that, but would they really turn it down, given the choice? I have also read many threads where people talk about the WRX, Civic, etc. that their parents bought them

My parents are certainly not well off so this never came up, but I have to say if they were extremely wealthy and they had wanted to buy me a car when I was in high school, I wouldn't have said no.
Yes, I had a certain sense of pride and satisfaction when I paid for my first car a few years later with my own hard-earned money, but when I think about how much money I'll need in the future (to buy a house, pay for my kids' educations, retirement, etc.) it would have been awfully nice to get a kickstart back then and not have car payments now.

I'm a drug dealer.

j/k
I work part time doing database stuff and save my money. I'm also a full time student. $20k isnt all that much to save up if you work at it. My parents dont contribute to my car at all. I pay for everything.. maintainance, insurance, gas, parking.
I can say the first car I bought was a 7 series BMW

M3's are a lot cheaper than most people think.. 18.5k w/51k mi
I like everything except the color.

Uh, no. You would be wrong there.
I want a car thats sporty (RWD is a must) and luxurious... easy on the insurance and maintainance. Low miles and value are important. Have any suggestions?

I've owned a 735i for a while... contrary to popular belif, the maintainance on it is reasonable. Overall, it has cost about 20% more to own than the Camry i had in high school (regarding maintainance, excluding purchase price of the car).

1) You can spend the money and buy it even though you don't think it's very effective to buy it since you can do alot more things with your money

2) You can save the money and buy a cheaper car and use the money you saved to invest

Hard decision to make as almost everyone has had to make that decision sooner or later...either way, it's your choice.
