Why would it need online activation? I'm sure a serial number will be included in the box and that should be enough. Anything more sounds like a needless hassle. How would people with no internet play? This is a single-player game, not a multiplayer game so I don't see the need for internet except to download patches and mods.

I will most likely need online activation, it has been confirmed to be a Steamworks game. Even if you get it you probably won't be able to play it until in unlocks on the 11th.

many SP games these days require online activation and list internet connection as a hardware requirement

What this means for you is that no matter where you buy Skyrim, whether at retail or via digital distribution, you'll have to activate it on a Steam account. Once it's activated, you'll have no need for the CD, and Steam's offline mode should let you play happily without being connected to the Internet. Unless you're one of the unfortunate few who has trouble with offline mode, that is.

So I'll have to install Steam? Haven't needed it yet.

Wow... interesting. Upon doing a quick Google search, you're right. I never thought Bethesda would choose to go the Steamworks route. I thought wrong.

I can't wait to go to Amazon.com, look up Skyrim, and read all of the 1-star customer reviews from clueless gamers who fail at using Steam. That was one of my favorite things to do when Civilization 5 came out.

"So, uhh, I really like Elder Scrolls games... but when I bought Skyrim, I had to install some sort of 3rd-party software called 'STEAM'. I had to make an account, and before I could play the game, it had to download more stuff, and it took hours on my internet connection. Bethesda last few games have been Steamworks, Fallout New Vegas, Brink, and Rage. They ditched GFWL after enough people had problems with it and Fallout 3. I'd expect pretty much all their games to use Steamworks here on out unless something happens.

It actually works out pretty good for me. I bounce back and forth between gaming on my laptop and desktop and the Steam Cloud is very useful fir keeping my character synced between the machines.

Who cares? That's like saying 'as soon as it's in the store you can get a gun and rob the store and get a free copy!' Well, ya you can, but don't act like it's ok.

You're lucky, I am just hoping that Futureshop ships my order in advance and doesn't make me wait until the following week! Chances are if that happens I'm just going to go in store and pick up another copy, then return the pre ordered one with that receipt since I only paid $40 for my pre order.

My internet connection appears to be faster than my dvd-rom so I actually just stick the key in steam and download the whole thing rather than installing it off the disk haha
