Wong said the event organizers are "trying to steer away" from anything political

I find it funny that in trying to steer away from anything political, they are making a strong political statement regarding Bush's actions after Sept. 11.

Edit: BTW I support the school on this one. They're not saying you can't say the national anthem or sing the star-spangled banner, it's just not part of the school-sanctioned event.

It's a tribute to people who fought for America, but they're excluding everything that's even remotely American. These people need to be slapped. Hard. And deported.

Wong said the event organizers are "trying to steer away" from anything political, and that, she said, includes singing the National Anthem and displaying the red, white, and blue. She said they don't want politics disrupting mourning and grieving.

How the @$%# does that disrupt anything?? And it's been a year already, it's not like people haven't already been mourning and grieving. I hope people come to this thing with flags and wearing all kinds of red white and blue just to piss the organizers off.

Quindel, a self avowed hater of the American Flag, the federal government, and the "Star Spangled Banner," said she is still patriotic.

that just says it all right there.

Sounds like they're trying to remember the dead without focusing on nationalism. As a university with an incredible amount of diversity and students from other countries I can sense some of the reasons behind it. They aren't trying to be anti-anything just making the event about the lives lost.....but "urged students to express their views at the open microphone sessions.".

The university certainly doesn't need to be attacked by people such as yourself. I lived in Berkeley up until a year ago and it's a cool town.

Pfft. I know it's been around for a while, but this sense that we need to avoid offending ANYONE is such crap. I was sure as hell offended when three planes slammed into US landmarks. Does being proud of America mean I want to spit on other countries or people from other countries? Not one bit. I don't care where someone's from, only how they act. Origins mean jack to me. But to be wishy-washy and afraid they might offend anyone is stupid. This is still America, so I don't see how celebrating that fact is foolish.

But, as AmusedOne said, the fact that they can do this is what makes the US so great.

Let them cancel the whole event. American academia and the environmental movement are the LAST bastions of communism and similar collectivist ideologies. But what else are the grey haired pony tails going to do?? They certainly can't get a job because they can't pass a drug test. Yes indeed they are non conformists...

Also, to prevent the exclusion of those who don't believe in the American Flag, there will be no tribute to the flag. "The flag has become a symbol of U.S. aggression towards other countries. It seems hostile," Quindel said

our flag seems "hostile"?? you bet it does!!! Attack our country you can bet you are going to see many planes with OUR flag performing hostile action on the SOB's who killed our people!

God Damn where do these people get off!! Why is it so hard for them to understand that if it wasnt for the American flag and what it represents she might not be attending college!

That's just sad. But the fact that idiots like this have the freedom to be such idiots is what makes our country so great.

Too bad they are trying to destroy the very freedoms that give them the ability to be such snots. The irony is simply amazing.

Fvsk Berkeley. 'Nuff said.

NightFlyerGTI is moronic fscktard redneck. 'Nuff said.

Edit: BTW I support the school on this one. They're not saying you can't say the national anthem or sing the star-spangled banner, it's just not part of the school-sanctioned event.

Exactly. The event is about the loss of life. Just because some other stuff isn't included doesn't make it an anti-america rally all the sudden.

But people will always bash trivial things to make themselves feel better.

If you don't think this is the school's way of appeasing US bashers, you are living under a rock.

The freedom that let's people act like retards is what makes this country great. The power these retards wield to force their retardedness on others is ruining it.

That's not a rock, that's Berkley. The organizers of that function are doing nothing except forwarding their own agenda. That's all well and good but don't be a hypocrite and try to pass it off as something else. I will repeat that they are hypocritical fuckin' retards and based on the qualifications that they have shown here, I would say engine and flavio are their leaders.
