Buy the diamond from someone reputable in your area. There is far too much potential to get ripped off on the net on a purchase of this magnitude.

Incidentally - I just went through this ordeal. Got a 1.1k stone for about $2,100. Color G, small visible inclusion off the table. I successfully hid the inclusion with a prong.

Turned out to be a hot deal.

If you want to check loose diamond prices look at ashford.com. Not sure if you want to buy from them but they do show the lab report on the stones.

we got a very nice marquis diamond from www.loosediamonds.com out of Seattle. No local jeweler could touch the price for the quality/size diamond we got from them.

this is one purchase, that yes, a local buyer/dealer will be of great service. I am lucky that my father inlaw is the vice president of a jewelry wholesaler (his company sells crappy tri-color gold, but he still has his contacts from prior jobs, and friends in the high quality realm)

My wife's ring cost me $2,700 a few years ago, and has been appraised by an independant gemoligist (strictly an independant appraiser, one who doesn't do any selling) for $9,500...

Nice Ice is the best Internet retailer I found. Unfortunately they deal almost exclusively in round, ideal cut diamonds.
Worth checking/e-mailing them to see if they have any Princess cut's avialable, though.
Also, there's a ton of info. on their site.
