LOP Toolbar

Im having major troubles removing this thing... I have use Adaware 6.0 Search and destroy and noadware all have not gotten this toolbar and i cant end task it in my Task manager .. it keeps comming back Ive got
Windows XP
and using IE 6

most toolbars are BHO's(IE plugins)
it is probably a new one that isn't yet recognized by those programs
run hijackthis http://tomcoyote.org/hjt/hijackthis.zip
and look under the 03 and 016 areas for something with either a very random name or similar to the toolbar's name

don't just "fixing" things if you don't know exactly what they are if you can't seem to find the BHO or toolbar with the same name as the toolbar just post your hijackthis log here and someone will post on how to fix

LOP has been around for a while and Spybot should fix it ..... unless its a new varient. Please post your HJT log and we'll take a look.

When you ran spybot, did you update its definitions first? Did you close out all browser windows before clicking the "fix it" button? Spybot can't remove some forms of spyware as long as you have an open browser. Post your HJT log and we'll take a look.

If you have Service Pack 2, you might see what happens when you go to Internet Options > Programs tab > Manage Add-ons button and turn it off there. I'm curious to hear

I was helping remove a spyware the other day that was evidently being reinstalled by a Windows service it had created, so also look in your Services for anything out-of-place. It might be hard to tell if you're not sure what is supposed to be in there, of course... BlackViper's Windows Services guide might help by providing a list of known Windows services that come with Windows.

On the computer I mentioned above, it would've been far quicker and easier to copy his data out and simply Drop The Bomb On It, except he didn't have his OS disc anymore. Keep in mind how fast you could set up Windows again and don't waste six hours battling something that you can nuke in two hours. If you get to the point where you do need to reinstall... suggestions here, including getting stuff tight enough to resist a spyware attack next time around. Not much wiggle room on a Limited account... :heart:

im not willing to reinstall windows... ill live with it rather then reinstall, but i did try the manage add ons and theres a lot of things and yes im using SP 2

One little trick: you can use NTFS Security to deny permissions to a folder to everyone, even SYSTEM, if you want to mess with its mind a little Awful hard to reinstall to a folder that even WinXP itself can't get inside of... :evil: Just remember that after locking up the folder(s), you don't want to approve its deletion in the anti-spyware software, or then there'll be a vacancy again.

So, what happens if you turn off the LOP toolbar in Internet Options > Programs > Manage Add-Ons? Enquiring minds want to know

Ok, lets open up Spybot S&D and update its definitions. We aren't running the scan yet because we're going to do our work in safe mode. Once you've got spybot updated, lets reboot your computer. After the post but before the first windows log on screen, start tapping the "f8" key. The menu will pop up allowing you to log on in safe mode.

You're now in SAFEMODE where we'll do the rest of our work:

First, open up HijackThis again and rescan your system.

You can close out HJT now and open up Spybot. Scan your system and fix everything that comes back in red. Reboot and if I didn't miss anything, your problem should be gone. Post another HJT log in your thread. This time give me the whole log as it contains valuable information such as your OS and what updates it has, your list of running processes, etc. Nothing in the log is a security threat. Its just helpful information.

You haven't posted all the log from HJT and I really need to see it. It shows what operating system you're running including whether or not you've installed sp1 or sp2, etc. It also shows your running process list which is vital for me to be able to fully assist you on the problem. You can post that here in this board or you can go over to where the REAL experts hang out and post your log there. Click on the link.http://forums.spywareinfo.com/. Actually, it may be best if you had Tony Klein and his group help you out with this one.

navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Go to Start > Run and type %temp% in the Run box. The Temp folder will open. Click Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty your recycle bin

Post a new log and we'll check for stragglers.

Before you do anything
1. Make sure that you have extracted HiJackthis to a folder that is isolated before removing anything, for hijackthis makes backups within the folder it is in.
2. Disable system restore, malware can come back through it.
3. Make sure you have winsockfix on your system, it may damadge your internet connection removing it.
4. Reboot into safe mode.
5. Close all browsers/windows explorer.

I have advised you to remove Messenger Plus, yet I still see it in your HJT log. Here is why:

Messenger Plus Bundling Lop.com

Many of you may have heard of a program called Patchou's "Messenger Plus". I used it myself once, before I discovered Trillian. Similar to the many front end programs for Internet Explorer (Avant browser, MyIE2, etc), Messenger Plus adds a user interface to Microsoft's MSN Messenger that contains extra features.

Patchou has brought in C2Media as a sponsor and is now bundling their lop.com software into Messenger Plus. For those of you who have never heard of it, lop.com software is classified as a trojan by antivirus vendors and as a browser hijacker by antispyware vendors. You can find plenty of information about it by doing a Google search for lop.com. Just be warned - some of the language used by lop victims will melt your monitor.

No single parasite has caused as many support threads at our message boards as lop.com (although Xupiter comes close). Ad-aware, Spybot, and all other spyware removal programs target several older variants of lop.com. It now comes in a version that is nearly impossible to detect automatically. It uses randomly named files, randomly generated CLSID identifiers, and uses activex installation methods that let them update all of their installers at once.

Before this change, the number of lop.com complaints actually had gone down because it was so easy to remove and could even be blocked beforehand. Since C2Media introduced these new versions that mutate randomly, the number of infections has become larger than ever.


If you do this and then re-post a new log, we'll have another go at it.

This is what the experts relayed to me. So please, lets uninstall Messenger Plus and then give me another log file. Also, Kazaa has to go as well. If you must have Kazaa, try finding Kazaa Lite. Its spyware free. Failure to do this will only keep the spyware on your system.

ahh, i overlooked messanger3, i have told many people to remove that app in the past for the exact reason for bundling spyware.

be carefull with kazaa lite, since it was copyright infringement, its name was not copyrighted and there are plenty of malicious "kazaa lites" out there that are named similar to kazaa that contain malware

That's correct .... in particular Kazaa lite resurrection has been known to carry a back door trojan.

BallisticMissle, I really hope you come back so we can finish what we started. I realize that these kind of problems make a person want to throw the computer out the window and not look back. However, if we uninstall MessengerPlus and Kazaa, we'll be well on our way to getting your system back up to snuff. Hang in there, friend. We will beat this stuff!
