Before everyone gets too excited: This isn't being released until Aug 6. So you've got about four months to wait.

Great price, though.

Plus by the time all 3 movies are out you'll be buying about 8 copies of the same movie in various Special, Ultimate, Extreme editions. I love DVD's but the buying and rebuying is just rediculous. I just bought Romeo and Juliet:SE and Usual Suspects:SE last week and sold my old copies to funco for only 8bucks each.

I agree with the major disliking of the re-releasing movies as special edition/ultimate (Damn you Lucas with 385 versions of VHS Star Wars), but I'm happy that they at least announced ahead of time that the better version would be out in November. It gives you a chance to wait if you want to and I can wait a few months for a better version.

This is probably a little off topic.

I was in China Town last week and they had several DVDs for sale, including LOTR. Now I know what you're thinking, but I've seen a couple on EBay that claim it has DVD quality picture, 5.1 all that stuff. I should have dropped $10 and found out, but the VHS movies I used to buy in C-Town were all crap.

Anyway, just wondering if anyone had picked up the China Town Lord of the Rings, and what their opinion of it was, quality wise.

eugovector: it could have been a great quality version of the film. there's a 4 disc SVCD floating around the net of Lord of the Rings that's near perfect dvd quality (ripped from an oscar screener dvd) and to most people its about as good as it gets until a real dvd is released. I've seen it and let me tell you its awesome. Maybe in China Town they transferred the 4 cd version onto one DVD.

For me, the 4 Disc SVCD is good enough for me until the November release of the 30 min extra rated R version. I'm assuming that the one released in November will have all the special features of the one released in August and then some or will they be different?

Yeah there is a two disc divx burn of this. Quality is awesome, about as good as a DVD rip would be. That said, I'll prolly get that special edition in November...sounds cool.

Was just browsing around on Best Buy's site and stumbled across the LOTR DVD. Seems they are giving a $10 coupon if you pre-order from them. Might be a few dollars cheaper than buy.com after shipping costs. Here is the link...

I have "tested" no less than 4 versions of LOTR bought from china town and wall st (in NY). Three of them were utter crap (two were green with single channel audio, the third had less of a green tint but still single channel audio). The fourth version was great quality auido and video (probably the oscar screener) and had the "you are watching an illegal pirated copy. call this number ..." crap scroll by every 10-15 minutes. As with all bootlegs, I find the copies that have chinese lettering on them are always the best. In this case, the three crappy copies had nice looking covers, the one with the great quality had an ugly white "home-made" cover and the back of the case had the story for Vanilla Sky I think (it said something like "snowboarding through life..." and the credits for some moive with Bruce Willis in it. go figure

Thanks for the note on the different release in November. I'll wait till then.

Great movie! I've read The Two Towers since then and am reading Return of the King now.

These books should both make for GREAT movies!!

LOTR is already out at my college. Kids here have the 4 CD DVD quality screener copy rip. It looked as good as DVD quality to me and it's in svcd format. Ocassionally it runs the "it's illegal if you've rented or purchased this copy" crap tho.

Best Buy
$25.97 after shipping and "Order" (?!?!?) fee. Would have been a good deal with free shipping.

The four disk set will be 30 minutes longer - but, remember, you will *not* get a copy of the movie as it was shown in the theater. If you want to get the theatrical version, you will have to get the August release.

Also, there's a five-disk release coming around Christmas...but no one's quite sure exactly what is in it. Speculation is that it will have the 'extended cut' and theatrical version and all the extras..

The 5 disk set is the exact same thing as the 4 disk, but with a National Geographic special about the movie and Tolkien on the 5th disc. It will also have different packaging and some bookends, I guess for the whole set once all the movies are out.

Like Hector13 said, if you find one, look for the one with the white cover. Thats the one I have and the quality is great. Mine was brought in from China. Cost me an arm and leg leg though ($1.25 USD hehe) Again like Hector13 said, on the back cover under "the Lord of The Rings" it starts out "snowboarding through life", then at the bottom of the back cover under the three pictures near the bottom it says "Walt Disney Presents Bruce Willis "Disneys The Kid" and then continues with the rest of its credits. Hope this info helps someone make an informed purchase if the chance comes up.
